When I brake I am getting a wierd grinding sound from my D/S rear. The sound is like a scraping sound of something out of round. I wish I could describe it better but it's like scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaape -Pause- Scraaaaaaaaape pause etc. I hope you get the picture. The brake shoes look ok - they still have meat on them. Any suggestions would be great. :Comp:

Hi Tony - Did you pull the drum to look at the shoes? Something is rubbing, I'd do a careful inspection with the drum off. Look for anything unusual or shiny!

I'd not drive it until you locate the cause.

Since you commented the shoes have meat left on them, I'm assuming you already pulled the drums off. Can you get the sound when turning the drum by hand with someone gently applying the brake (with the engine off and the car on stands, of course)?

Could some rust scale have fallen in the drum? You can also check to see if anything (backing plate?) is rubbing on the drum. Look for spots that shine from being recently rubbed.

I removed the wheel, then removed the Drum - I found the stud holes to be slightly elongated (kinda' oval). I guess the wheel was a little loose at one time and it caused the holes around the studs to widen some, thus causing them to move making the sound I hear.....So I guess I need a new drum back there everything else looks good.

Be careful with that. make sure the studs themselves are solid and stationary, and make sure the holes in the rim aren't egged out. I almost lost a front tire on the freeway because the lug nuts were loose, the holes egged out enough that they could go over the nuts, and the rim moved right over the nuts.

Fixed it!! The wheel I had on there was not seating all the way down, although the lug nuts were tight. The center ring on the axle was hitting(very slightly) the center of the rim not allowing it to seat all the way against the drum. I went to the guy I bought the rim from and he let me exchange the rim for another one (thank God he has 10 in stock-blows my mind). That one works great along with another drum from Carmen Faso, I am all set now. No noise all is perfect!!!!! :beer

Cool. It's always nice to hear when that it's simple, and not some involved repair.
