I thought i would get a faster answer if i started a new thread.I removed the lifters, timing chain and sprockets, etc. My manual says to simply "slide" the cam out. But i cant get mine to come out. It rotates freely but when i go to slide it out it move barely any and gets stuck on the front bearing. What should i do?

Check the rest of my thread: http://v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=160648&page=4

You are probably going to have to mess with it to get it out. I had the same problem with a motor i was tearing down, and I kept turning it and pulling and it finnaly slid out one section at a time.

I hope it comes out easier than that one in that other motor. :TU:

Not all that unusual for a cam to wear "into" the soft babbit of the cam bearings. You can screw a bolt into the cam and use a slidehammer to coax it out. It will come out eventually. Distributors out already right?

Brian man, sounds like a nice project.
Im guessing you have the grill and rad out too? Or did you pull the motor?

Id like to do the same thing really, new cam, but you have more guts than I do!
Would love to see pictures :kodak:

I had a problem similar to this on my 350. one of the lobes was catching on a rod bolt. I went crazy trying to figure it out, I did not want to get out the slide hammer! I had a friend who is way more patient figure it out. Try looking / turning the crank. Let us know.

Well my dad got home and i told him the dilemma. He twisted and pulled and the front part of the cam came out. But that was as i was about to go in and rest and he couldnt get the next section out. So when i get bak out there im gunna oil up those bearings to try and get it through there.
And Curtis to see the whole project w/ pics check the thread i listed earlier :TU:

I second what ted says about rotating the crankto slide out cam. Supposedly this is going to be required with the engine fully assembled. The lack of internal clearance is tight enough that some engines will need crank spinning and some don't. :Do No:

John can you help out Brian maybe, Installing his new cam turning it is really tight.

I've also read somewhere where you can modify an old cam and turn it into a cam bearing ream.
