Which way does the flywheel go on?

Back when I pulled my 72 455 apart I didn't think to mark the orientation of the flywheel. I know these are external balanced motors, so how do I figure out which is the proper orientation to mount the flywheel on it?

The bolts are not evenly spaced. It only goes on one way. Put all bolts in loose, then tighten 'em up. You can look on the eigine side of the flywheel to see where the cut out of the crank flange was placed (there should be like a little of a dirt/rust "footprint").

Yep, he's right. you can try it anyway you want, but it's only going on one way. The flywheel weights on mine face towards the transmission. Brian

Thanks for the helpguys. I can't get the flywheel on the motor at the moment since it is on an engine stand, or I'm sure I would have noticed that myself.

As long as the answer isn't "it goes on one of 6 ways, you've got a 16% chance of picking the right one" I'm happy...
