Hi guys, Im about to purchase a thermostat for my 67 rivi with a factory '73 455 from old buickparts.com, however they give 3 options. 160, 180 and 195 degrees (i think). Which will suit my application the best? i never knew you could choose the temperature. cheers Jordan
Pass on the 160, too cold; cylinder wear decreases a bit at higher temps. 180 is a good all-around choice. Devon
Agreed. I run a 180 degree stat with one, 1/4 inch hole drilled in the collar for add'l flow. I was running a 180 with three holes, but too cold. This one seems to keep the temps nicely at 180 degrees. Steve
Ditto on the 180, for an all-purpose t-stat. BTW, you can buy them at most any local auto parts store.
Heck if I know... we don't know what country you're in! Unless you add location info to your profile in the UserCP section, we generally assume a member is in the U.S. So where are you located?
You got it mjt, from New Zealand (the bottom of the south pacific ocean, just under Australia). And ummmmm our claims to fame are probably only the Lord of The Rings Films and The Flight of the Conchords. and too right David G, il put that in my usercp to make things easier. Loving my Buick....even tho i still havent heard it start up in over 2 years lol, but getting there!
Actually the Factory CHOSE a 195 degree for 455 engines. It is in the service manual if you don not believe it.
Dave, is that even on the 70 engines? I thought it was more of an emissions thing in the later 70's. -nate
Nate, That was true even in 70. A good friend was Old time GM mechanic and he stills swears they ran better with the 195's. I still never could bring myself to try one.
If you havn't found one yet, go to your local Supercheap (I work at one in Auckland) get a tridon part number: TT1-180. Pretty common (same as chev) and we have them in stock
