Which rear brake drum to buy?

Discussion in 'The whoa and the sway.' started by 12lives, Aug 5, 2017.

This is for a 1965/66 Buick 10 bolt 8.2 rear. (Yeah, it's not clear what year and why it's in my 70 GS)

So it looks like all the major brands for drums are made in china. Any recommendations, or ones to avoid?

It's a very common drum. Same as what was originally in your 70 GS. I have some nice originals that have not been turned, and some with their first turn, sitting in the shelf.

I was looking for a original look, replacement for my 66 GS for the rear, and could not find one that I though looked like the original. For know ended up have two sets turned and will use one of them. Had to fine a old time person to turn them, first took them to todays parts stores and they said cannot turn, just buy new China, not original looking ones.

It used to be that when you asked for drums or rotors they would give you 2 choices, the Chinesium ones or the made in Canada ones. They stopped making that stuff in the USA a LONG time ago and have been sourcing them from Canada for many years.

Only parts store that still turns rotors around this area is O'riley's. If you don't have one of those you can try your friendly neighborhood brake shop, they should still have a brake lathe there. GL

I've got a shop to turn them, and Canadian ones would be fine, I guess....but every one I see is from China.

Well it was O'riley's that told me they would not turn them, after a quick measure, said they would be over the limit. All of these were very nice and only needed cleaned up. As I said we found a shop that did them and said they were good.

Did you ask if in they have anything else but Chinesium? The kids working behind the counter not seeing the car probably assumes that you probably don't want to spend the extra coin on a car that old? Won't hurt to ask all they can do is say, no all we have is Chinesium. Then is where you ask them if they can get anything better, they may still be able to order the good Canadian ones for you.

If one store can't help you, try a different chain. GL
