Where do the shorts usually happen?

'65 Skylark is popping the brake/TS/backup lamp fuse. Things seem fine in the garage, then fail during the road test. This points me towards the TS switch, but I didn't see any obvious open spots when I tore into the column.

Are there places in this harness that typically fail or am I going to be teasing out individual wires until I find the culprit? Thanks.

Bad grounds are the biggest culprit.

I had one problem on a 67 that I won't forget. The ribbon harness which runs from the fuse block to the trunk had a small screw get under it where it ran under the back seat. The screw was likely dropped when the car was going down the assembly line. Anyway, over time the screw had embedded itself in the ribbon harness and was shorting against the floor pan. It wasn't visible just looking at the harness so it took a while for me to find the thing. I had to replace the ribbon, the screw had broken the one wire.
Good luck, these problems can be maddening.

If it is popping the fuse it is not a ground . It is a hot wire touching ground. It could be anywhaere in the circuit.

What ragtops said. I'd recommend removing the sill plate and lifting the carpet on the driver's side and looking at the ribbon cable. Have you installed stereo speaker wires along that path, or removed and replaced the back seat cushion? Those are pretty good causes. That screw thing is one in a million, but seems to happen a lot. Go figure.

They always short where you can't reach. Unfortunately.
    Keep us updated .

The back of our 65's are full of taillights wires!!!

But they also have the very best taillights GM ever put on a car!!!!

Thanks for the replies. Long story short, I replaced the two flakiest taillight sockets and all seems well.
