 I want to put 15 inch torque thrust 2's on my 70 skylark. I want 7 inch wide up front ( a lower profile tire up front and bigger tires in the back) and 10 inch wide in the back with the biggest tire I can fit back there. I went to a local wheel and tire place and the tire guy said a 10 inch wide wheel will not fit in the rear. is this so?
I was told I have to offset it by another source, but have no idea about offsetting. if I can fit a ten inch wide wheel back there what do I need to do? please help:Do No:

Been going round and round with this for months. There are plenty of people here with 10 wide rims on their cars. Backspacing is the critical thing. Opinions vary from 5" to 5-1/2".

Then there is the tire size to worry about. 275/60's will fit very comfortably. I'm going to try for a set of 325/50 Drag Radials or possibly the M&H Muscle Car Drag DOT tire N50 series. Another here already has the Drag Radials on his car with 15x8's. I'll be using a10" rim with 5" backspacing. Hopefully I shouldn't have to trim the fenderwell.

Lots of racers have 10" wide slicks on their cars. Good luck with yours.

I know that the 8" wide fit very well, and I think that 9" would fit with no prob either. I haven't hear of many people running a 10" wheel though. You might stick with the 9" just to be safe, it will be plenty of tire back there and still have a mean stance to it. That's just my $.02.

    295/50/15 Firestone Indy 500

    Hello,
I have a set of Firestone Indy 500's 235/70/15 on the front, tread is 7 inches. 295/50/15 on rears, tread is 10 inches. These were formerly the Firestone Firehawk. Anyhow they hook up look great and most of all they fit great. I should mention that the rears are on 15 x 8 wheels with a 4 and a half inch back space(Summit gets them from wheelvintiques).
    Drive fast and take chances!!!

original wheels, What is max tire size?

I plan on leaving my original wheels on my car.
I want to put the largest tire on that original rear wheel.
I don't want to trim, buy new wheels with correct backspacing.
    What size tire will fit?
    Thanks!!!!!!!

I have seen cars with 275/60R15 BFGoodrich radials on them with factory 15x7 rims. You'll have lots of room, 2" or so, on the inside by frame rail, and about 3/4" by the fender well lip because factory backspace is 3-1/2" or 4" (I can't remember which).

A lot of people use the 255/60R15 size as it is 27.1" in diameter and that is almost exact to the factory's 27" tire diameter in many applications. The 275/60's are 28" tall and would require swapping the speedo gear in the tranny to keep the speedometer accurate. It will slightly lower your rpm's on the highway, which isn't a bad thing. The drop would be about 110 rpm's. Not a lot, but every little bit can help.

As I said, I'll be getting my 15x10's this week and putting those 325/50's on. God, I hope they fit OK. I'd hate to have to ebay those tires.

    Phillip,
So, What do you have on your car now if you are putting 10s on it?
I don't have a problem with going with a taller tire. Are there any other combinations that might work? Wider is better, RPM reduction doesn't hurt either!!!!
    Thanks for the help!!!

Right now I have, I should say had as I already sold these, 15x8 Buick rallyes with 275/60R15 DragRadials. I'm just getting greedy and want more meat under the car.

Also, I did some changes to the engine and the 275 DragRadials will no longer hook up at all, so I got a pair of slicks for the trtack, ET Drags 26x10x15's on 15x8.5 rims. The 15x10's are just more so for looks.

I read a magazine article a few years ago that talked about widening stock wheels. A good shop can carefully cut the rim in the middle and weld in 1-2 inches or metal to make the wheels wider.

You can do it that way but it can cost you double. The Wheel Vintiques, Buick rims are identical to factory original. I have a set of 15 x 8's on my 71 Stage 1 with 275/60's on them. There is about another 1/2'' to 3/4" of room to the fender lip. The factory back spacing is 4-1/2". If you check with Wheel Vintiques and the 15 x 10's have a 5" back space, that gives you considerably more room for a bigger tire, say with 10-1/2" wide tread vs the 9" wide tread I have. On my 15 x 8's you can plainly see if you closely compare to the stock 15 x 7 rims, that the 1" extra width reveals itself as a 1" wider shoulder on the show side of the rim.

I know alot of you have bought wheels from Wheel Vintiques but there is also another place that widen wheels too.Its called Stockton Wheel in Stockton Ca.I sent my 15x7 ralleys out to have them widened to 15x14. I decided to just have the wheels widened and skip the outer chroming(I'm a cheapskate)but the guy was not satisfied with the look so, he had the whole wheel triple chromed all for FREE!It cost me $60 bucks to send them from PA.The cost was $260 to have them widened and shipped back.I can't say enough about how satisfied I am. Their phone # is 1-800-wheel.

Would someone mind posting some pictures of a 15x8 rallye? I am considering putting these on my '70 455, but would like to see what they look like before I do so. It was stated that the 1" is added to the showside of the wheel, so I would be curious as to what it looks like. Thanks!:TU:
