We're looking at a '65 Special Convertible. The top is shot and the interior is badly damaged. The guy says it runs good and he put a power steering pump on it several years ago for his daughter to drive to school. I know it's a V8 but the guy wasn't sure what size V8.

We're gonna go look at it again later this week. Last time it was in a barn with stuff stacked all around it so we didn't really get a good look and the guy wasn't sure his wife would sell the car.

I'm only looking to make a fun weekend driver out of this car for my wife and myself.

I know it's a tough request without a better description of the car, but... can any body give me a rough estimate of the value?

with a shot top & shot interior, chances are real good the floor pans are shot also.$1200 for the interior not installed,$6-800 for a top & pads & labor to install,$600 for pans & labor to install.and thats not including the purchase price:pp wow,$2500 & you still dont have the car, only parts.what? bad quarter panels? they dont make replacements.priceless, ive seen guys begging for them saying they will pay whatever it takes.:( take a real good look at it before you buy it.post some pics when you go look at it,then we can be more objective:beer

  5. a pair of full length floor pans are only 225.00 .if the car has been stored insidea barn or shop for a long time theres a good chance it isnt rusted out. other things besides weather can ruin tops and interior. just be sure to inspect it very carefully.

Wow, that price guide seems very low on a few cars that I checked. Could be a good tool to try to get the seller to come down on their price.

    Good luck.

Okay guys, we finally got to get a closer look at this car. Needless to say I'm less than impressed.

I did tell the guy I'd give him between $600-700 for it which I'm now regretting. :Dou:

Both rear quarters have been puttied and done badly. It's been puttied behind each front wheel. The drivers side floor pan has been redone nonprofessionally. The top is shot and the front bar needs to be replaced.

On a good note the engine isn't stuck, but it's not running either.

some early 65's had the down flow style radiators. you may be right about it being a saveable car but lets be honest .. you could buy a car in way better shape for 5-7 grand, or you could dump that kind of money into this car repairing the rust and still not be halfway to a nice car. my motto is " buy the nicest car you can afford even if your planning on restoring or modifying."

The big problem for me is this is prolly the nicest car I can afford... well no I take that back... the big problem is I already 'have' one of these type rusties(1960 Invicta) sitting in the garage. If I spent the same money on the Invicta I could have the brakes completely done and get most all the body panels I need!

I keep telling myself to stay focused... don't get distracted, but then my brain screams "BUT IT'S A CONVERTIBLE!"

    Stupid brain

To me the car looks OK for 6-$700 ..I can't see wanting to much more for that price. Especially from Indiana. Like was said you can easily sink 7-8 grand into it. If you can get it on the road without too much work all the power to you. Work on it while it's a cruiser. More so in the winter. It'll be instant gratification every time you take it out in the nice weather.
You just have to be carefull when purchasing things. Take your time, shop around. Don't spend big $ on ebay for NOS parts. Leave those for the GS guys. Remember GTO's, Chevelle SS's etc are some big buck cars that use the same parts also and will go for big $.
Like some 66/67 NOS rag visor brackets that just went for $459. Sure I could have bought them for the Skylark but there probably for a car that will be worth $50,000+.
I have a 67 ragtop Skylark I use when the weather is nice and a 67ragtop GS400 4spd #s matching car (in need of resto) and a 67 hrdtp Special soon to be street/strip 464 drag car. I've purchased enough parts over 20+ years to do my cars over and know it's easy to go overboard.
