I got a '75 455 with a turbo 400 today that hasn't been ran in 15 years. The engine isn't frozen up and seems to have decent compression, it turns over with the starter. There's some gummed-up crud under the valve covers and I want to see if I can get the engine going again. Before it was stored the guy put marvel mystery oil in each cylinder, plugged all the holes, and stored it inside out of the weather. He told me it had 150,000 miles in it when it was pulled from the car. For the $100 I paid for the engine and tranny, I feel I didn't do too bad:grin: :TU:

The last '70 SF I picked up had about 5 gals of water in the pan from a hurricane last summer. I drained the pan and immediately filled it with 5gals of kerosene or diesel. That put the kerosene about 1" or so up the cylinder walls. When I got home from work I'd run a drill on the oil pump to pump the kerosene thru the motor while a friend slowly turned the crank. I noticed that after a few times, the fluid was now squirting instead of pouring. After I did this for about 3 days, I changed the fluid and filter and did it all over again. When I dropped the pan, it was reasonably clean. The heads were clean. Most of the crap just melted away. Sounds like a pain but considering the alternative much cleaner job.

Thanks for the reply:TU: This engine is in good shape for how long it has sat. The guy knew how to preserve it as he use to build old lead sleds. You should see the work this guy did, too bad his right hand hurts him to much from all the years of customizing. He was going to put the engine in a '48 Buick he customized, but it was too wide to fit without cutting any of the sheetmetal. He mainly specialized in the old Merc's, the cars he did go upwards of $100k. The rolling chassis for the '48 Buick with nothing except the body and frame he got $11k for. It was chopped. etc. and had a Monte Carlo front and rear frame where he was gonna put an air ride suspension under it. He talked for a couple hours about his hotrod days of the 50's and 60's and the customizing he use to do. I'm gonna unload the engine off my truck tomorrow and see if I can get it going again, thanks for your help.
