I use standard Penzoil 10w-30. Just wondering everyone's opinion on conventional vs. synthetic blend vs. full synthetic and brand preference. Thanks.

Valvoline VR1 Racing oil 20w50. It's the only parts store oil I can find that has zinc.

This is the thread you should read.

The newest oil (SN) is not formulated for our cars.

Most current new car engines have roller valve trains. Our flat tappet engines demand more of oil. You'll want to supplement the newer oils with a ZDDP additive if that is the way you want to go.

Thanks guys. I have never heard of ZDDP so I'm going to look into it.

I was adding a quart of that Marvel's Mystery Oil between oil changes since I leak about a quart between changes and just replace that leaked amount with MMO. Any thoughts on using that stuff? I also add about 8 oz of it to every tank of gas.

MMO has been around for a long time. I don't see any problem using it at all. The more important point is that you should not be using SN oil in an older flat tappet engine.

SN meaning Synthetic? So conventional is best? no synthetic blends?

I have never heard of ZDDP either. Nobody ever told me I should be putting an additive in the oil..
I was pretty sure there are multiple brands that make oil specifically labeled for classic cars. Unless I'm just remembering wrong, I could've sworn The last time I added a quart it was labeled as such..

You will probably not be able to find that oil easily. The simplest solution for you may be adding the ZDDP additive to the current oil you are using.

I'm surprised than none of my car guy friends has told me I need to put additive in my oil. I guess I'm glad I came across this.
Do they sell ZDDP at walmart or auto stores?

Maybe. There is a lot of information here on V8. The new oil tech thread that I linked is very good. I hope you read it.

I'll definitely get the ZDDP additive. I just hope I can try to find some oil with little detergent. I am thinking Royal Purple may have to be my new oil when shopping locally otherwise I'll have to get a specialty oil. I feel like Penzoil has let me down now, I didn't know oils were evolving throughout the years :(

Doesn't the detergent in new oil cancel out the ZDDP?

VR1 has ZDDP in it already. I broke my cam/motor in with this oil and this is the only oil I have ever run. Pulled my motor last week because I was going to swap to a 455...when I tore off my intake and oil pan the cylinder walls, cam and lifters looked perfect....and that's with me running low on oil a few times between oil changes. As you can tell from my avatar....I drive my car hard....all the time.

Special ordering oil is inconvenient and unnecessary imo.
