The contaminates introduced into the crankcase of a diesel are much different than those in a gasoline engine. The additives in diesel and gasoline oil blends are specific to each and address those differences in operation. The folks that engineer engine oils, spend a great deal of time and resources

I know a guy in who is an oil formulator, I could ask him for the specifics, but it will end up being a technical library dump, and as dry as dust to wade through.

The difference of 100,000 miles in oil changes between the HR2 and Rotella is about $300.

$300 over 100,000 miles is very small amount.

Or $10 per oil change difference.

For me, going with something I know that has been specifically designed for higher performance gasoline engine application, it is worth the difference in cost.

Is it $10 over 3,000 miles or 6 months value? Considering fuel costs over that same time can swing wildly up or down and make the $10 insignificant. Even more, the entire cost of having the car, it becomes very irrelevant in the dollar side of things.

    A little off track..
If you still have hone marks after all those miles, thats a good thing? That doesn't relate to poorer ring seal?

Wix filters and PennGrade. They sell it at the GS nats and I've been buying a case or 2 every year.
    Cheers

Back when the oil companies started cutting way back on Zinc and phosphorus in modern oils, Diesel oil was a good temporary alternative because of the elevated levels of ZDDP, but diesel oil is formulated differently. For one thing, the detergent additive package is way different because of the soot produced by diesels. Then there is the lack of anti-foaming agents. From what I learned from this thread,

    https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/new-oil-tech.222499/

ZDDP and detergents are antagonistic. ZDDP wants to stick to engine parts, detergents want to clean it off. Today, we have excellent oils formulated for our old engine needs. So why keep using Rotella? Is it the price? IMO, it's like that old Fram commercial, Pay me now, or pay me later.
