Anyone know what the thing behind the shifter opening is?

Looks like someone cut and added another shifter to this car. Could it be for one of those locar shifters that attaches directly to the tranny? You usually see them on rat rods.

Or maybe someone went with a longer tranny, I doubt it's for 4wd . What car is this out of? I have seen something similar with an elcamino that someone made into a 4wd by mounting the body on a fullsize blazer frame, but doubt someone would hae done that with a buick..............:Dou:

Please - someone let us know what this is for...........

It is a 68 Buick Skylark GS convert. It looks like it was spot welded in.

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but that is a hole in the transmission tunnel. It could have been for an aftermarket shifter installed by a previous owner. It is not original and should be repaired by welding in a new piece of metal during the bodywork phase of your restoration.

I was just trying to find out what it is. I have never seen one before.

Like I said, I was not trying to come off like a jerk. I've never seen anything like that before either.

    Just to be clear....
The hole towards the front of the car is the one that's not original.
The bracket in the rear is original, and it's where the shifter linkage goes through from a factory automatic floor shifter to the tranny.
(At least in 1967 they looked just like that)
I've attached a picture of one in a 1967 Skylark....

Will the vin tag or the trim tag say if it was an auto?

Rick is correct, thats where the auto shifter came up from, maybe your car was converted to a 4-speed at some point in its life.

    Thanks

68 did not have a automatic shifter like that.
someone must have added a shifter from an earlier 67 vintage to the 68
the 4 speed hole in front of it looks original though it is somewhat distorted.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought those spotwelds on the rear bracket looked "factory"....

The rear hole is not correct for a 68/69 model. That would be for an earlier car. The front hole looks to be correct for a 4-speed. I can't really be sure but it looks to have the rolled edges around the opening which look factory. Again hard to tell but it looks right. The position looks farther up the hump than it really is because of the back (extra hole) being added. Check out some of the pics of the 68/69 4-speed hump around the site.

Car is probably a 4-speed car originally but someone at some point had the 67 set up laying around and just installed a `67 auto console in it along with that shifter opening for the floor.:Do No:

I believe i KNOW this car & yes it was a FOUR speed & it looked like some one welded a 66/67 set up @ one time.I saw this car it was in my area of P.A. @ one time, not long ago.
