My neighbor came over today with this T10 Buick transmission. He acquired it through a parts acquisition deal with a guy out of state. It appears to be an authentic Buick transmission and when the side cover was pulled for inspection it appeared to be very clean with little wear. The shifter and linkage are all there (to include the little spring under the shifter linkage assembly). I was told the shifter assembly is exactly like the one used on the Chevy 409 bench seat cars (???)

The shaft turns very smooth and shifts in all 4 gears to include reverse. It's a rare find and I'd like to offer it here for some of the 60's Buick guys.

Question - what is this tranny worth to include the original shifter?

    Cast Iron Case
    4 speed
Complete shifter assembly (minus the shifter ball)
    10 Spline input shaft
    23 spline output shaft
Manufacture date Main case - G2462
    Tail shaft date - 7/17/62
    T10 1B W.G. Division
    Tail shaft T10 7B

    Nice find!
That tail housing doesn't look like a Buick piece to me. It should have multiple bolt pattern mounting bosses with a GS cast right smack in the middle of them. Does yours have a bow-tie emblem cast into it on the passenger side? If so then I think that you've got a Chevy piece on your hands. What is the outer diameter of the front bearing retainer at the mounting flange (outboard of the attaching bolts) ?? There was a unique 1963 only small front bearing retainer version and those can be worth considerably more than the other ones. The shifter definitely looks like the one for the 61 62 63 Biscayne 409 bench seat and/or Impala Super Sports.

    Re: Buick GS Tailhousing

How many groves are cut in your transmission's input shaft (perpendicular to the direction of the splines) ??
Here's a photo of my Buck T-10 showing the proper tail housing with the multiple mounting bolt bosses and the GS marking (mine also has an iron side cover).

    Robert,

I'll get the information and get back to you later today. Thanks for taking the time to help out here. I did not see anything with bow tie significance although it could very well be a chevy trans. :Do No: Was this shifter available for the early Buicks 1964, 65, 66? I guess this will be a learning experience for me. Again, thank you.

    Re: Buick GS Tailhousing

Robert, the tailhousing for the 65-66 Skylark GS had the 'GS' cast into it, but I believe the full-size Buicks did not use the same tail....so no 'GS' on those.
My parts book shows #1373034 for the GS (only), and #3774911 for 62-66 Buick.

Mike, the date codes signify late July 1962 build date.....most likely for a 1963 application.
I've seen prices in the neighborhood of $600 at swap meets.

So does mine, Ted. It also has the three groove input shaft which indicates the high nickel gear set inside used for the big cars.

    Walt;
Are those part numbers you posted for the complete transmission assembly or just the tail housing piece?

    Interesting!
maybe that was used on all 65-up Buicks? That would explain the dual shifter mounting bosses on the 'GS' housing.
Rob, the pn's are for the 'Transmission extension', so that would be the tailshaft only.
Now if someone with a 62-64 4 speed car would chime in, we would know for sure.

Robert - The input shaft has the one single cross hatch line all the way around. I'll get more information shortly.

My guess would be a 1962 Skylark or Special trans. It does have the correct case and tail housing for an early Buick.

The shifter is different than the 64 4 speeds.

1964 cars had Borg Warner T-10 cast iron case with casting T-10 1B. on passenger side. Drain plug is low on passenger side. Aluminum tail housing with casting # T-10D-7. 27 spline output shaft, 10 spline input shaft with no rings. ( 3 rings used on 65 GS Trans has different ratios).

See my sticky on 64 & 65 4 speed parts in this section for pictures.

A little late, but the date code seems to indicate the trans is from 66. G = July, 24 = 24th day of July, 6 = 1966 and 2 = second shift. Check the gear ratio in first: 2.20 = close ratio (GS Skylark + big cars), 2.54 = wide ratio (small block Skylark/Specials)
