What is this part that I circled in purple? Does it run off of vacuum? Does it have anything to do with the stator-switch for the transmission? Thank you in advance for your help.

I believe that is your dash pot. It keeps the carb from stalling out and bogging down when you suddenly let off the gas.

Yep, that's the dash pot, found on Dynaflow equipped cars.
It doesn't use a vacuum source, and it isn't directly connected to your stator linkage (also linked to the accelerator pedal)
It's there to prevent the engine from stalling, just like Phillip said.

Adjustment of the dash pot is done by turning the bolt on the engine side of the unit :Smarty:

It's found on cars later than Dynaflow too. My car has one.

Ok cool. This must be an older Nailhead. Mine doesnt have the dashpot and I dont think there is a spot where it should be. I was hoping it wasnt connected to the stator switch because that would mean that there is yet another part I was missing... Thanks alot everyone for clearing up my confusion and nervousness... :TU:

'71 was a year of changes for the dashpot. Most cars had it but some late in production came with an idle solenoid. All '72 had a solenoid. Parts book lists a kit used to convert a dashpot engine over to the solenoid set-up.
Shares power with the trans. control solenoid. Ignition switch energizes the idle solenoid while a vacuum switch in the trans. energizes the trans. solenoid.
All part of a learning curve for later emmissions.
My car was built as a 350-2V car with a dashpot.Current set-up is 4V witha solenoid.
I've heard of the solenoid wired in parallel, by some owners, with the AC compressor. AC on means solenoid on & ups the idle slightly.

Starr, you are supposed to have one of those. I have to look I might have the bracket, the dash pot itself you should be able to get from NAPA. Let me know if you want me to look for it. :bglasses:
