What are these off? And are they worth anything?

I have three 14" Buick Rallye rims with beauty rings that I collected along the way several years ago. They are in good restorable condition (need cleaning, paint, etc)

I'm led to believe these are somewhat rare. Are they? What cars came with these? I'd love to get them reunited with the correct model vehicle they were originally intended for as I have no immediate use for them (I'm looking for 15" wheels).

    Thanks

if you mean the somewhat rare 14x6 wheel (not dog dishes, full wheel covers, or ralley wheels) used on some skylarks and gs's, they're not worth much. rare, but unfortunately not very sought-after.

    David-

They look basically just like your regular buick factory mag, except the outer chrome that would normally be found on such mag is painted the same color (Argent?) as the inner section. There is a beauty ring, in stainless I believe, that snaps onto the rim in the area that the chrome would normally be seen. The center has the normal five pie piece shaped (best way I can think to decribe) sections of black.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't think these were worth a whole lot, but I was/am hoping that they could go to someone that has a need for this style rim as they're just taking up space in my garage.

    Take care,

    Ken,

I believe the wheels you are referring to are ALL painted, no chrome (except for pop on trim ring), yes? I had a set of these on a 70' Skylark I had years ago. They were an early production run I believe. They also may have been what came on some of the earlier A-body Buicks.

They are uncommon, big time rare, I don't know. :Do No:

Those are the wheels I have on my '70 GS350. I'm sure they are original, almost everything on this car is. It was build the last week of November '69. I hadn't really paid much attention to them, but I found it kind of strange that they had trim rings. I thought all rallye wheels were "wheels only." I'd be interested in knowing what specified which 14" rallye wheels a car was built with.

I'll take a pic and post it when I get home, but Jerry and Chris are right on in their description.

Like I said before, I don't think they're worth a million bucks kinda rare , but if someone is looking for these as their car came originally with them, I'd like to see them go to that person.

Thanks for the replies and I'll post a pic tonight. I'll also see if I can find any sort of date code on them.

    Chris Lott,
If you have a buildsheet for your car I can tell you what wheels your car originally came with. The Super Sport wheels for 69-70 look identical to the 14x6 Chrome wheels, but they have a trim ring. The 71-72 Super Sport wheels are completely different, and are the rare ones.

If you are a member of the BPG and get the Buildsheet you can read all about them. I wrote an article about the different 14" Optional wheels for 65-72 GS/Skylarks and it is going to be in the next Buildsheet. It explains how to read the date codes and gives the UPC and Sales Codes. The article on the 15" Optional wheels was in the October edition (#3).

Thanks Duane, I enjoyed the article on the 15" wheels and look forward to the 14" article. I knew about the 71-2 super sport wheels being the odd geometric wheels, but had no clue about the '70 SS wheel being such a different animal. You are right, I'm looking at my original window sticker right now and it lists :
    ?A6 V7 Super Sport Wheels $68.46

I don't know what the number/letter before the A is due to my sticker having a tear there. So, is the super sport wheel (69-70 generation) a 14x6 rallye with a trim ring, or is it a different design/cast? Thanks!

EDIT: the code is PA6, after looking on my buildsheet.:TU:

    Chris,
Thats "PA6". The Super Sport wheels are Identical to the 14" Chrome wheels, the only difference is they were painted and had trim rings. It was a lower cost option for the guys that wanted the 70 series tires, but didn't want to pay for the chrome wheels. They also used the same centers and lug nuts as the chrome wheels.

The 14" article describes the 65-87 Chrome, 67-68 Buick Rallye (Chevy style), and the 69-70 & 71-72 Super Sport wheels.

P.S. I like the look of these wheels, everyone puts the chrome ones on, so you don't see the Super Sport wheels very often. A lot of the early 1970 Model year GS's had these.

    Duane-

So I'm guessing from your description these are the lower cost wheels from 69-70? If that's the case, I assume that they are probably not desireable and I should just get rid of them?? :Do No:

    Thanks

    Cool!

Never seen one. It looks like the center is chromed but the rim is not??? For someone showing and trying to be original to the buildsheet/window sticker, I'd think they would be worth while to show with....stick them on ebay!

    Bill-

Actually, the whole rim is painted, just like the centers on the "standard" ralley wheels. The only bright work is the trim ring. I believe the trim ring is stainless steel. The one in the picture has the worst "curb rash" of the three I have. One of the other ones has been buffed out somewhat, leading me to believe it's not a plated surface.

I think I will stick them on Ebay, but probably only after I post them here in the parts for sale section in case anyone in this community is interested.

If you mean the one in Holmdel, NJ, I do plan on going. I want to meet you guys and check out everyone's cars! I'm working on getting the car going as I really want to be driving it come spring time. If for some reason it isn't on the road by then, I do plan to come on down anyway, assuming you guys won't mind me showing up in a Chevy!

    Ken,
The wheels you pictured are the 69-70 Super Sport wheels, and I don't think you should just get rid of them. I am sure someone out there needs a set.

Also these wheels have the "Flat Type" centers. These centers are also correct for the 65-70 14" chrome plated wheels, 71-newer wheels had raised centers. So if someone wanted a "Correct" set of 65-70 Chrome wheels they could use these and get them plated. I see lots of 14" chrome wheels on restored 65-70 GS's that are wrong. The wrong wheels can knock a car out of getting a Senior award at the BCA shows, and somewhat "kill" a car at the GSCA Concours class.

Thanks Duane for the education. I appreciate it. Actually, a few people have contacted me regarding those wheels, so I'm happy they'll end up going to a good home!

I hope to meet you someday hopefully at a Northeast event, as I see you're from Pennsylvania. Take care and thanks again!
