I was at a buddies house and he brought up putting a turbo on my engine (401ci). He told me about this company called sts turbos has anyone heard of them? http://ststurbo.com/
The STS system is pretty good.... I prefer a twin turbo system myself but either is fine. Here is an article I wrote about turbocharging that may help you: And here is a guy with a nice turbo system on a nailhead, send him a PM: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?242479-1966-skylarkgs-with-turbo-nailhead-build
If I had unlimited funds,, this is what i would do.... but,,, again you have to have this in mind when you start building the engine ,,, not as a afterthought.... you gotta have good forged pistons in that puppy.... and the right cam... and the ignition set up right.... for a turbo,,, not just any set up.....take a clue from the GN cars that Buick built.....
Picture #36 shows an early factory experimental turbo nailhead. I've heard that it wasn't practical because there wasn't a transmissionn at the time that could handle the torque. http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b...lheads/?action=view¤t=TurboNailhead.jpg Also of interest (??) picture #1- a reverse flow nailhead, #26 - a factory 3x2 manifold, and #8 - a nailhead powered motorcycle. Unfortunately picture #8 of Ed Sarno in his younger days passed away last year. Built this bike on a shoestring budget in the late 60's using a '59/401 that since the initial build NEVER needed freshining up. Built a '65 Falcon also with a 425 "Nail", which a friend of mine now owns. Tom T.
#8 is my favorite!! WOW what a talent to be able to make all that work.. About the sts setup, I did it on a nailhead and it does work. Thier are some issues that you need to be aware of. First of all nomatter what power adder you add Doc is right about forged pistons, the correct ignition, the fuel system that can handle the hp rating that you are shooting for, sizing the correct turbo to your needs( turbo mapping), intercooler pipeing and routing.Dont forget about the cooling system also. If you run a sts, you need to worry about oil pump and oil pooling in the turbo. i got rid of the sts because of issues with oil pooling but i really didnt like that it hung low and rubbed my garage floor when comming in to the garage.(a month of working on it i got rid of the pooling) I switch setups and built my own headers. Are you going to run a blow thru carb or a fuel injected motor. CSU build a great carb but with a price tag of 1,000.00 it isnt cheap. not counting a boost reference fuel regulator, -10 feed and return lines. I also run a EV carb hat, MSD 6btm boc,msd dist, Tial 44mm wastegate and blow off valve. The price difference isnt much different from rear mount to front mount. Nomatter what you are going to have to fabricate alot but it will most likely run between $5,000-6,500 in parts not couting the motor.Out of that cost the Turbo itself was only $900. You can buy cheaper parts i am sure and save but nomatter what it isnt cheap. feel free to PM me and i can send you pictures of either setup and can go over anything with you to try to help you out.
