"The "370 HP" stickers were someone's creative add on"

Wondering if that someone was part of a factory effort to produce a GM showcar? Given the SCO color and equipment I wouldn't be surprised if this Centurion originally did GM show car duty. Hmmm...

At least in 1972, there was no chrome air cleaner lid factory installed, even on the "modified high performance 455 with dual exhaust" as the option was known as.

And in 72, the 370 HP figure was already in file 13

Interesting Brad.. I assumed that all the HP/Stage 1 engines in the big cars had a chrome lid, after seeing this one, that certainly appears stock, and knowing for sure that my buddies 73 Riv, with the Stage 1 motor, did in fact have a chrome air cleaner lid. I suppose that someone could have chromed both of those lids, but I really doubt it.

Ahhh, there's the problem. You said Riv and I said Centurion. Riv's did, Centurion's didn't, at least in 1972.

I am sure your correct Brad.. If memory serves, you own or did own a 72 Centurion with the HP engine.

This has turned out to be a great thread. I learned a lot of stuff about the big car stage 1 option. I have searched online but there is very little info out there. Even here my previous inquiries have not turned up much info. Thanks Jim and everyone else.

It would be a very nice car done out; - I'm not too crazy about the colour but it was typical of the day. If I didn't already have a couple of Buicks, I'd be all over that one. Oh...yeah...my wife hates Malaise era Buicks...that would be a problem too. The problem is I like them and the 72 Centurion was always one of my favorites.
I hope it finds a good home and gets the love it deserves.

For some reason I can picture this car driven by a guy in all white suit with a big cigar and a set of antlers or ox horns mounted in front. o_O

Funny thing.. my first car for a daily driver was a hand-me-down 73 Centurion 4Dr HT.. Factory 455 equipped, but by the time we got it, it had single exhaust on it.. Could have been changed from dual to single, that was often done back in the day to save money when the average joe decided that he did not want to buy any more parts that absolutely required to fix his car. But more than likely it was just the standard 455...

The reason I thought of it in relation to this car, was a post about the color above.. That car was Yellow when my Dad bought it, but he hated that col0r so much, he had it painted brown before he would buy it. I recall it was one of those grease on the chrome paint jobs.. The Jambs were still yellow.

Probably not the special color that this one is, but yellow none the less..

That was a good car.. the direct clutch in the TH 400 gradually failed on a 30 mile freeway trip on me.. I had no idea, until the oil light came on. Engine oil light..

Here it seems that I was rocking out to the AM/FM Stereo, and had failed to notice that as I was driving, I was continually pushing the gas pedal down, to maintain speed, as the direct clutch was failing in the trans... I am sure it was very gradual.. because I was shocked when I saw the oil light, quick turned the radio down, and was greeted with the sound of a 73 455 revving about 5500 rpm.

Yes, it spun a rod bearing..

With the trans failed, a rod bearing out, and the typical MN rust starting to set in, the next stop for that one was the Local boneyard. I visited it for many years afterword, as I was scouting for other parts in that yard... then they sold out, and turned it all into a golf course/housing development.

Only regret was that I did not pull the Engine and the Short shaft 400 trans, but back then, I had no idea I would be in this business..
