Any of you guys have a source for the black, with threads running through it, plastic tarp type material that is on the backside of the convertible top well liner??????

You see this material when you open the trunk and see the back/underside of the Top Well hanging down.

Looking for the CORRECT STUFF. Thanks

Update....if any on you guys know of a black poly/plastic tarp material that fits the following description and I ultimately find it acceptable I will buy the stuff and send you what you need for your convert FREE.

    > It needs to be a shiny black plastic or poly material
    > It really needs to have the threads inside the material....so it's actually two layers of the plastic/poly (the color on the other side doesn't matter as you won't see one side of this part of the convert well) with SINGLE THREADS layed out in a 1/4" SQUARE PATTERN throughout the material. A lot of the tarp material I see now has plenty of thread material...but TOO MUCH...they are spaced much too tightly inside the two poly layers. The originals have a simple 1/4" or so between each VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL row of threads.

I figure more "eyes" searching for this stuff and we might be able to find the CORRECT LOOKING MATERIAL or something very close.

I am starting to look at sites on the internet like TarpsPlus.com, etc and will probably contact them next week to see what they know or have.

Let me know if you have any sources or know of anything like this.

    Thanks, Patton

Also Dave--not sure what you meant by NOS well. NOS would be an original GM part. Are you saying they make one that is EXACTLY like the original and if so, have you bought one from them???

If you have bought one then DOES IT HAVE THE BLACK PLASTIC TARP MATERIAL on the trunk compartment side of the well????

Just trying to figure out what you meant. Thanks, Patton

    SmittyDawg Need another garage....

It would be great if that exact tarp material was readily available. When I replaced my conv top and well liner years ago, the new well liner of course did not come with the plastic liner and insulation. So I took a seam-ripper and literally cut the threads connecting the tarp to the fabric liner, then I meticulously sewed the original tarp material to the new liner using the same needle holes that were used in the original tarp material. Pain in the butt, but at least I then still had the original look and complete Buick well-liner.

Duane Heckman (concours Buick judge) told me last year at the Indy event that they don't deduct points when judging due to the missing tarp material, but he sure wished that more cars had the complete liner.....

    Details make the car!:bglasses:

Talked with Legendary last week and they are supposed to be sending a sample.

I will report back and post pics of what they send as soon as it arrives. This is good news to hear this stuff is being remade. Thanks very much guys and I hope to post some pics very soon.

I received a sample from Legendary last week....it's black and has the "ripstop" thread running through it. There is a slight difference as the thread appears to run through the fabric and form a DIAMOND pattern vs. the SQUARE pattern that is evident in the original material I have from this car. I suspect we will go with it anyway as it's better than no plastic material at all and has "the look" of the original.

They make the wells and will not sell the material in bulk....makes sense as they are in the business of selling completed parts.

I will post a pic next week of the original material and the new stuff from Legendary.

If I locatye some by that number I would make sure I got a sample first to make sure it is what you are looking.

the inside layer of the convert top material is, at least on the non-Buick I am helping on, color keyed to the top color. Other people would have to double check (that have other interior colors) to see how far GM went with this color-wise and brand-wise. This particular car came with a dark blue convert top and the inside well material was a similar color....we have the original well from the car to reference. I can reference others pretty quickly around here but they all have black tops so they aren't of much use.

I ran that part number on GMPartsdirect and didn't come up with anything...will check a local dealer next week.

Patton, this is what they have listed in their catalog. My original liner is in good condition, but the installer is concerned if it tears, then that is the first thing to install. Did you end up using their part ?

DL---Thanks for reviving this thread...I failed to post any results so now I have a second chance.

Yes....on the car I was involved with restoring (70 W30 convert) WE DID END UP using the Legendary well. They used their "ripstop" plastic and it came out great. Was the pattern in the ripstop EXACTLY like original?? NOT EXACTLY the same but very close and likely as close as anyone could ever offer.

We had them make it up using a blue cloth inner later (the part you would see if you looked thru the back window down into the well with the top UP)...as this car had a dark blue material in there originally and I don't think they would have used a blue material unless we supplied it (I think black would have been used which was not exact enough for this car).

They did a real nice job, it fit and looked great....I would recommend this material if you are trying to get it real close to original.

Thanks again for bringing this up.
