Have a look at the following link from a Mopar web site: http://www.moparsunlimited.net/fastest_production_cars.htm I'm sure this will start some chatter......
I like the Srt8 in the new 300C. I read it in a car magazine yesterday, and they said it blows away the hemi's from the 60's and musclecars.
The hemi was not streetlegal (doh, who in their right mind will compare a racecar to a streetcar) and the Stage II was not available, so that rules both of them out.
I'm not making any more comments about Hemi's....I don't wish to be insulted. Be careful, Cody! :bglasses:
There is a few 300C's and Srt brands running around here, and when I ride with my friends dad in his 1972 Chevelle SS 454, we eat them up basically on the main street, and his Chevelle is all stock with the exception of flowmaster 40 series muffs w/ headers. :Brow: I know if his '72 chevelle can do it, a '70 stage 1 would be hard to beat. :3gears:
WHat was this list comprised from? Did somebody just sit down and start writing or is there some solid historical information to back this list of times up? o No:
You mean saying that they are overpriced pieces of junk? :Brow: Well they are overpriced, but I used to own a 69 GTX and I loved that car :3gears: Now where did I park my Buick :beer
You guys are being too harsh on the hemi guys. We all know if you can get them started and running right for an hour or so they are a very powerfull force to be reckoned with. Chris, if you loved the car I'm betting you had a 440 magnum, or maybe a six pack. Not a hemi. The 440 was a great engine. Nobody really wanted a Hemi back then, they were a pain in the a$$ to keep tuned and nobody I knew (HS class of 71) had the spare cash or wanted to deal with that at the time. My good friend's 70 Challenger 440 Magnum 4spd was the fastest car I knew about in 1972. Scarey fast and it was dependable too. He'd already blueprinted it and put in some 488s as I recall. He's still a master at power shifting to this day. Gas was cheap back then.
Be careful.....the HEMI police read here!!! I've shot off my mouth too and caught crap for doing it. Dare insult a HEMI and get called every name in the book! ou: I'll say it again.....the HEMI runs good but I think it's over- rated. IMO...any big block motor can run just as well or better. Even some of the MOPAR guys prefer a 440. People drool over anything with a HEMI in it.....regardless of what it looks like. It's all about popularity, that's all. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. (although I wouldn't mind having one under my hood! )
Yup it was a 440 4spd car, Vitamin C orange with a Black bucket interior. My Dad called it the great pumpkin
I'm not sure where this list came from, but I did see a similar list put together about 10 yrs ago by Muscle Car Mag, and they recorded times/speeds from original tests, but also got some very kind owners to meet at a track and actually prove the numbers. They had stage 1 buicks, Yenko 454 chevelles, GTOs, Stangs, and yes a few hemis, and 440's. I can't find the copy now, and can't remember who topped the list of the actuals. I do know that all cars ran mostly stock with only allowed headers and racing slicks.
i too saw a similar list from the 70's . question - i thought that yenko's chevelles were only 1969 chevelles with 427 ci engines ?
Nope! It's a "Semi-Hemi"....At best it's more a-kin to the Boss 429 Ford than to the real Hemi's of the past with those quench pads it now has!:Smarty: It's all Chrysler's marketing ploy and works because the average guy out there doesn't know that a real Hemi basically has a half of an inverted softball for a combustion chamber.
