Does anyone know the weight difference between a skylark GS with the full boxed frame, and the non GS cars with the open frame? Anyone cut out a boxed frame? Thanks, J

I put together a list of as where I think the extra weight is coming from.

    -Frame+~50lbs
    -bucket seats/ vs bench+~25lbs
    -console+~30lbs(they are suprisingly heavy)
    -GS trim+~10lbs
-Engine +~100lbs(300 vs NH, or 455)
    -Wide wheels+~20

Total +235lbs Could this be believable?

Depends on the year models. Some years the GS hardtops were not boxed and some they were.

Both my 65, and 66 are boxed. Do you know how much more do the boxed frames weigh?

Yes. I am building a test car out of it. I will be temporarly running an all iron BB chevy for my 70 chevy 4x4. Im hoping to get this new combination into the high 9's on pump gas in a 3500LB car. My current 496 ran low 10's in a 3500LB 1970 camaro. The camaro I borrowed has been sold, and I can't afford to purchas and build a 65-67 chevelle right now. I need to make the car weigh as close to 3500LBS with driver, as I can full bodied with the heavy BBchevy, and a roll cage. Im going to go back to buick power in the car down the road.

I would consider it carefully before cutting up a GS boxed frame. Why not just build a tube frame? I personally would love to find a GS frame for one of my projects.

I want it to be a factory full bodyed street car. Im trying to figure out excactly how much extra weight that frame is adding. If it is 50+ pounds Im going to cut it out. I hate to but the car needs to weigh 3500lbs with driver. Most the guys I race with weigh 32-3400lbs.

If I can find a perfict 66 skylark frame near central ca I would love to buy it and stick that under there for now, and save my GS frame. It is really easy to swap the frame, if you have a lift. Can be done in a couple houres if the engine and trans is out.

Ok, I see where you are going with this. Too bad we couldn't just trade frames. I would like to have a boxed frame under the post skylark of mine that has a 401 in it.
If you do this and the pieces come out well, interested in selling them? Just a thought.

I will let you know. I would probably want to keep them in case I wanted to go back stock with the frame. But I know of a 67GS in a wrecking yard. It had a 400 in it. That is the car I got my fan shroud of of for my 65. I cant remember if the frame is bent or not. If you are interested let me know and I can find out if it is still there and what shape it's in.

:Do No: I don't know if the '67 is the same . I'm fairly sure that '64-'66 are same.
Anyone else been had the opportunity to compare the '67 frame to say a '65? Just askin.

66 and 67 are more similar than 65 and 66. Convertables, elcamino's, and wagons also have the boxed frame.

I have some side rails cut from a 66 GS...I can weigh them this weekend. They consist of the standard outer rail, and the inner reinforcement....I'd guess the reinforcement alone might be 50% of the total.
1967's used a different rear spring....pigtailed on top and bottom. So they're a bit different than a 65-66.
65's and early 66's had a slightly different front crossmember....just cosmetic really.

Please don't cut up a clean '66 GS frame!! There are allot of other ways to reduce the weight... use a small battery, a smaller alum radiator, lose the carpet, sound insulation, sway bar, the bumpers, inner front fenders, radio, gas tank, remove the window mechanisms, use lexan to replace the glass windows, use alum brake drums....and I'm sure there are more ideas!
