Alot of newer cars dont even use gaskets on alot of parts, just permatex. Thats why they call it "gasket maker"!

I think the permatex forma gasket is something else, a gray substance that comes in a tube. What I used was permatex High Tack Gasket Sealant. It comes in a metal can with a brush built into the lid. It is a red sticky substance with a distinctive smell that would normally not be pleasant but now is because it sparks my memory of being young and working on my cars when I was in my late teens.

Normally, I use the term "Permatex" to refer to any one one of the varieties of sealants that come in a tube. Although its a brand name, Permatex has become the generic name for them. The stuff you used is commonly referred to as just "High tack". A red syrup thats really sticky. Kinda reminds me of molasass. it comes in a spray can also which I prefer when doing intakes. Gives a more uniform coating. Some people prefer 3M weatherstrip adhesive for gasket sealer. Otherwise known as "yellow death" or "monkey snot". You use that stuff and your never getting that part off the car....ever. That is horrendous to remove and will literally require a crowbar. Then theres the old school gasket shellac made by Indian Head. Thats a brownish syrup that has a very unique smell.

Amazing how certain smells bring back good memories. For me, its the smell of Cox model racing fuel. The smell of castor oil wafting in the air. Good times!

Sorry about that, too. The dealer's name was Pollard-Wittman-Robb, or some such spellings thereof. It was 40 years ago, after all. There's a different dealer at that spot now- 6001 Van Nuys Blvd.

what is special about the arp bolts are they coated with something? Luckily i had a few brand new bolts the exact size I needed in a drawer. The old bolts actually had narrow spots on them. and the studs they provided with the water pump were the wrong size and had fine thread on one side and coarse on the other. I dont know what those were for but I didnt need them after all. Makes no sense unless the same pump is for a lot of different applications and one of the applications needs studs.

Your water pump should have studs in it. The fan attaches with nuts. I take it your fan is bolted in?

Oh ok. Ya mine has long bolts that go through the fan (4 blade no clutch) through and aluminum spacer through the pulley holes and into the water pump spinner thing. Ok thanks a lot now the mystery is solved. I hate having left over parts makes me nervous. haha

Oh...you have the base 4 blade "poverty" fan :). I assumed you had a clutch fan.

Good job Gary, I've used the welded nut method on Ford FE exhaust bolts before, worked well!!

Did they put them on 350s without AC? This car came from detroit AC probably wasnt a deal breaker. I thought of upgrading to the hd fan but with my new aluminum radiator keeps me around 180 even idling in the hot florida sun. Except when the water pump finally failed and coolant levels drop to half capacity. It got to 240 and was hard starting. I was wondering where all my coolant was going. Now I know it was weeping for a long time. Couple days ago it started full out bawling and crying a small river.

Generally speaking, higher-quality fasteners are harder and stronger, so that they break less, and the heads round off less. OEMs use the cheapest fastener that will adequately do the job, which is good business, the cost of using over-kill fasteners in millions of cars adds up quickly... but it terms of a single job like a water pump, its worth it to upgrade to good fasteners if you have to do the job anyway IMO.

The ARP timing cover and water pump bolts are black oxide coated, which protects them from corrosion, and looks good (though not 'correct'). They also usually have a smaller head than a bolt of that diameter would typically have, which makes it easier to get tools on them in confined spaces. I like 'em.
