I am replacing mine due to a broken hole where the t stat housing bolts. Got everything about ready to go back together; had to strip every accessory off the front, which turned into resealing the power steering pump, and replacing a broken a/c bracket with one from Alan Grove. My question is, I am using 3M weatherstrip adhesive to glue the gaskets to the back of the water crossover, and I'm going to follow Matt Martin's instructions on resealing the o ring on the bottom, but do I have to use sealer from the side gaskets to the heads? Seems like the original I took off, most of the old gaskets stayed stuck to the broken manifold.
Piece of mind I'd use sealer on both sides. Dont take much... Like Brylcreem, a little dab will do ya.
I always use double O-rings. It makes it more difficult to install the water manifold, but it ends any possibility of a leak.
Thanks for the suggestions. Finally got it fixed; no leaks, other than I apparently didn't tighten the upper radiator hose and heater hose very well, so that gave me a bit of a scare. Doing a set of repro finned Buick valve covers now; waiting for them to arrive from Centerville. He got in three sets, and sold them all within a very short time. I didn't realize that even the repros are supposedly hard to get now.
I bought a set of good used finned covers from a guy in California (not Centreville) They arrived in great shape, but I had forgotten that the people's democratic republic of California required an AIR pump in '66. There is a relief in the left cover to allow clearance for the pump. I was a bit irritated at first, but now it's a conversation starter and I really don't mind.
