I just started my restoration on my 68 GS400 convertible. The body is off. I do not have a welder. If anyone has a 'cheap' mig/tig for sale, please let me know. Also, I could use some 55 gallon barrels to put under the body to work on the underside. Any help, suggestions, or ideas would be greatly appreciated... Thanks, Gil
Hey Gil, Might be better off using the steel 30 gal drums. Easier to work around, lot of older farms in the area south of you will have them around still. That's what I used on my '69 along with 2 6' glue lam's under the rockers (2x10 works too). Sorry I'm not closer, or we could swap them back & forth. Jim
welder hi, i have a lincoln 220 stick welder for sale. asking 200.00 it. looks like new, only used to weld some parts to my car. i don't know how to use it,that's why i'm selling it.....mike
I just upgraded my mig to a new Hobart Handler 140. I had a "cheap" off brand mig for about 10 years, bought it used for $200 and sold it for $150 :bglasses: If you're planning to do a lot of sheetmetal work my advice would be to get a good 110v mig. Lincoln and Hobart both have excellent small mig welders for "reasonable" money. ( My Hobart was $549 Canadian before taxes). Make sure you get one with a "gas kit" as the flux core wire is not good for body work. If you buy a "cheap" off brand you will be cursing it everytime you use it- especially for thin metals. A good name brand mig will last a lifetime and you won't regret buying it. Tig welding is a whole other subject. I'm no expert but unless you are an experienced weldor its not the way to go. A mig is easy to learn how to use, not so with a tig. Hobart has an excellent forum for welding information. http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/
You really don't need drums. You can use cinder blocks and 4x4 available at Home Depot. See attached pic.Works great and it is cheap!
