Do you mean that ring thing hanging down from the clutch fork? I've had two factory four speeds and have never seen one of those. They were either never really there or have been tossed in the rubbish long ago by some technician. My springs always just insert into the hole in the clevis pin.
I also thought spring through the clevis was correct. But when I took a look at the diagram I thought maybe I was wrong so I thought I would ask. Thanks for the reply.
