I have one untouched one and I am looking for a mate to the one I have. Need one that is unported. Either small or big valve - ok.

Check out member NA10.5 post in parts for sale on 11-20-09 for a new replacement 786 untouched cylinder head.

I have a few '70 small valve heads. Any date code in particular?

Date code is not as important as the casting number. Must be #1240149 which is the service replacement head. Small or big valve is ok. This head is listed as the service replacement head for 1970 and 1971.

NHRA does not recognize the production version of the 1970 head #1231786 as legal for Superstock. Based on my conversation with them a few weeks ago, they have no intention of pouring the 1970 production head either despite my offer to send them one anywhere in the country at my expense. (frustrating)

As a result, I need to find the mate to my single #1240149 casting.

    Thanks

    Jody

I just looked at the NHRA website under competition catagory and checked blueprint specifications for the 1970 455 engines, they list both casting numbers for that year and all horsepower ratings. If they still want to argue with you, they have some real problems with the way they treat the racers. Glad I don't have to deal with them any more, it's just a bracket race anyway.

    Doug,

Even though it is listed under Blueprint specs they do NOT have the 786 head listed on the runner volume spec sheet for Super Stock. I argued on this with them a year ago and was told if nobody had "caught" the error in over 30 years they were not changing it now even though every Buick came from the factory with this head!. As another note on this combo the approved stock piston from all manufacturers is illegal for Super Stock because of cc volumes! I asked if I built this combo and showed up at the first race with engine tore apart could they tech and approve it there. They told me I would be "tossed" as it would be awhile before new specs (if approved) could be published! Good way to keep their customers happy!!! Needless to say I am not building that combo.

Disappointed to hear that not much has changed in 40 years, NHRA is still giving the Buick guys a hard time.
