I've started tearing down my '85 parts car. Is there a correct way to remove the trim off the roof that won't break the clips underneath, or are they just considered a sacrificial piece? The car is a Limited, blue, with a 3.8. I'm keeping the body, trim & chassis. The rest is up for grabs. Post a reply with what switches, knobs, buttons, sensors, whatever you need & I'll check the condition of what I have, post a pic, etc.
I just did a top on a 87MonteCarlo with one of those half vinyle roofs. If they are the same you will break the clips along the bottom of the back window guaranteed. Even if they are new. Lift up in the center of the rear trim and wiggle the trim off and pull those two pieces out. Then at the bottom corners of the rear window remove the screws. Then carefully slide the horizontal pieces rearward out of the clips. For the side and top I wiggled the molding off from the side clips and slid the molding out from the ones on the roof. These roof clips are hard to find where I live. The clips on the roof I could not find at the time I did mine. I reused all of them anyway. All together I think you need 4 kinds of clips. Since reinstalling mine I have seen a store on Ebay that advertised all the clips to install the vinyle top. I can't remember the store though. If I run into it I will send a P.M. The ones at the bottom of the rear window are available where I live. If you need some shoot me a P.M. Hope this helps.
I'd love to get rid of the vinyl top on my 83 Regal w/out screwing it up beyond repair. Not to piggy back this thread, but, wth. Is it possible to remove the vinyle top to give it jut the old metal roof top look, like the GN's have? What would this process intail? CHEERS Eric
