Vinyl top install or re-install

If a 70-72 GS either didn't have a vinyl top or had one and someone ground off the tabs to hold the vinyl top trim, is it hard to install the tabs again? Or any other creative ways to hold the trim on? Thanks

Why in the world would you want to put the vinyl top back on?

You can install the clips with special short screws that come with sealer on them, but this will always have the possibility of leaking. My stud welder kit came with a box of the correct studs for reinstalling trim clips. If you know exactly where you need them to be installed, a body shop may be able to install them for you. I also like vinyl tops on some cars.:)

When I had my car repainted in 2009, I had a choice to keep vinyl roof or remove all the studs & paint the roof. Since build sheet indicated the '72 GS was vinyl roof car, I reinstalled a new roof.

Since someone ground the welded studs off and basically ruined the factory set up for a vinyl top, I'd just paint the roof.
If you were to reinstall a vinyl top, you'll have to drill holes in the corner of the quarters by the rear window for the corner pieces, plus IIRC theres a couple holes for the rear molding also along with the studs/clips.
IF you decide to paint the roof, I'd lay in the trunk and see if those above mentioned holes were properly closed by welding, NOT body filler.
