Well, its not illegal to sell a vin tag and title, its what you do with it after its purchased....theres all kinds of state and federal laws restricting what you can and cant do, but theres a moral thing too....its f@$king wrong....

I have this dilemma too. At what point is that car no longer a numbers matching car? At what point is the car no longer the same car that rolled off the showroom? I think there is a point when you have a rusted shell, that you have to cut out, weld and replace a majority of body parts, bore the engine replace the upholstery, that that car no longer becomes what rolled off the factory floor other than the vin-tag. What made a gs a gs anyway? example was there a special set of dies for GS quarter pannels and skylarks? hmm. I think as long as you use the same parts that the vin tage suggests and disclose that to the buyer if you sell it, no prob with me. jmo

This is the hook...once the car leaves your possession you have no control over the story the next owner gets. Problem is, when the deal goes south down the line, the person (purp/criminal) who swapped the tags will likely be held responsible.

There’s plenty of personal and monetary risk involved in this kind activity…be very careful. Sometimes you just have to walk away and start again with a better car.

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Rules are simple....not legal in any way, shape or form!

Those who do become involved, including owner, restoration shop, etc. should all be "hung out to dry."

I always wonder "why" anyone would want to do this if all they want to do is keep the car? Why bother unless you want to fool someone :Do No:

Its wrong to do it :spank:

not to get in a pi$$ing match but whats the difference if you replace every body panel and the only part original to the car is the cowl area where the vin is attached or if you take a good body and transfer everything over??? why are mustang and camaro bodies available new? is it illegal to put your vin tags on them? what good would the bodies be if you cant LEGALLY change tags? there is a legal way to do it. if you are doing it to fool an unsuspecting buyer and dont tell them its been "rebodied" or "rebuilt" then yes it would be wrong.

as George said, there are many different opinions.

Financial gain is the only reason anyone would touch a vin# or part #.What ever the vin came out of is worth less than what it is going into. And somewhere somehow someone will get ripped off.

The main reason why it is illegal to touch the vin tag is that is how the car thieves sell a stolen vehicle. It is considered a felony to alter, remove or replace a vin tag. One of the past Muscle car enthusiest Magizines had an article about someone buying one of these "rebuilt" muscle cars and the original owner that did the tag switch is now serving time in the pokey. Also in the resto area of MCE they had stated that it is illegal to comit this tag and title switch. Be carefull what you do today you can pay for tommorrow
