How should the rivets be oriented on a GS VIN tag? A car I'm looking at has the tag positioned under the dashboard ears and the rosette rivet heads on the bottom of the tag as if they were installed from under the dash. For some reason it looked odd to me. Is this correct? Does anyone have a pic they can post? Donny
Donny - I can't answer for a GS specifically but for Pontiacs they come through the top. The VIN tag would be installed through the windshield opening before the windshield glass was installed. I would be suspicious of anything else. Do you still have your '73 Chevelle SS 4 spd car? That was a cool car. K
Keith, Thanks for the input. I sold the '73 to a guy from Boston. It brought over $31K, which I believe is a record for these cars. We were both quite happy. I'm selling off the last of my '73-'77 parts. Here's a link, let me know if you can use anything. http://www.chevelles.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=17600 Donny
I have parted a couple cars with the pop rivets pointing upwards. I believe it was dependent on which plant the car was built in.I believe the Framingham plant were like this.I think I seen where they pop riveted the vin number tags on at Fisher. If you search ,you may find where Duane talked about this. Pat
Thanks Pat. This is a Flint car. This is the only red flag with this car and I'd like to clarify it. Has anyone else seen the rivets installed From the bottom on a Flint car? Duane or Jim, you out there??? Thanks
I had to remove mine to register it after i lost the original registration. I had to do a rubbing of it for the DMV I'm pretty sure i remember my rivets coming from the underside. Oh yeah my car is from flint. I could be wrong though I am going off of MY memory
My Flint-built 70 GS 455 is rivetted from underneath. IIRC, I checked the assembly manual and it verified this. (Or am I imagining that? Was the VIN put on by Fisher or GM? Duane!!!!!) Either way, I am 100% sure they were from underneath on my car (bought from original owner in 1983.)
Most GM plants building A bodies had Rosette facing down including Flint. the car you are looking at is correct
Here is a pic from the underside of a 1970 Flint built skylark. Not the best pic but... kinda tight in there. [/IMG]
