Is there a way to determine a VIN number for a 1972 GS Convertible from the trim tag? The VIN is rusted and illegible. I know it should start with:
4G67(K, U or V)2H. I don't think it is a BB car, because it appears to have a kickdown cable and the frame has been changed to a hardtop frame, so there are no numbers there. From what I read, the hidden VIN on the firewall by the A/C box usually isn't there on a Flint car. The engine is a BB which I haven't found the numbers on yet, but I don't think it's original. The body number is 249054 and the build date is 05A. I called Sloan and they told me the only way they can search is by VIN. Does anyone else have the records for 1972 that could be searched for that specific week and match the Body number to the Production number?

    TR 135 36 B PNT
    05A A65

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Best Regards,

Don't think so. Have you found a build sheet? Even if you did it is possible it is not for your car. There is no way to determine VIN from trim tag. Only other places a partial VIN would be is on the original block or original trans. Original paperwork could also be helpful. :TU:

You may be able to have the Sloan Museum go through the microfilm and find the VIN by searching the Body numbers. It may take several hours at $30.00 an hour to find it. At least you know if was built in May. If you call them please let me know. I may be able to help get close from the Stage-1 work I have done that will get them a lot closer saving them some time and you some money.

I don't know if this applies to convertible frames, but on coupe frames th VIN is stamped on top of the frame just below the drivers door.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the input all,

Since it doesn't have the original frame, block or trans (I think), there are no numbers there. I pulled the seats and only found a small piece of paper with what appears to be a few legible option code numbers. My only other plan is to pull the a/c box and look for a VIN behind it, but from what I understand Flint built cars weren't stamped there. Also it appears the tank has never been pulled, I will also check there for a build sheet.

If you have some research done on "Week 1 of May" and can give me the closest VIN's to my body number I'd appreciate it. Then Maybe I can call Sloan again and give them a range of VINs to search. The girl I talked to there made it sound like a VIN search was the only way. It really just sounds like it can't be that hard to search for that week and match the body number. I don't know how many cars they built per week, but it has to be less than 1000 to look through.

    Thanks again,

Thanks so much to Mark M aka gsxnut for the help in determining my VIN number. He worked with Sloan to match my body number to the VIN. Now I know the new car I bought is a 1972 GS 350 convertible. Thanks a million Mark!

    It would say "OUCH".

Yeah, I'm at least hoping those chrome valve covers are hiding some Stage 1 heads. The car does have a BB steering shaft, but the intake is a later EGR intake. I'm not sure when they started using the EGR, but I hope the intake doesn't match the block and heads.

congratulations on the saving of another ragtop. And the color combination is way classier that the way the car has been treated. But now that it has a owner who will give it TLC there could be another one back on the road.

    X-Rated,

It is awesome that Sloan has the information and I was able to work with them to help you out. Sometimes it just takes a little guessing in the right spot to get close. Sara is great to work with at Sloan. Anytime I can help I will gladly do it.

    AWESOME ! ! !
