I ordered a VFN Stage 2 scoop last Monday, but there's a 4-5 week lead time on delivery. Unfortunately, I really need the exact dimensions and configuration of the base (mounting surfaces) to pass on to the paint and body guy much sooner than that. I'm already aware of the dimensions specified in the VFN on-line catalog, but without a really clear illustration, or series of photos of the base of the scoop, it's difficult to tell exactly how large a hole to cut in my hood. One question I have is does the mounting flange fold out from the scoop walls, to create a shape like a brimmed hat when viewed from the front (allowing you to drill the fastener holes from the top with the scoop in place? Or, does it fold inboard (to create a shape like a capital "C") when viewed from the front? So-o-o-o... Could someone please take a couple of photos of a VFN Stage 2 scoop, especially the base (mounting surface), and measure the width of the inside of the base for me? That information should hold the paint and body guy over until the scoop is shipped to him. As always, thanks in advance for your help.
Dan, the VFN's scoop mounting flange uses tabs with holes on the inside to mount it to the hood. I don't have any pictures of mine, but if you still need some measurements let me know. Scott Pettit
Thanks for your response, Scott. I already received photos of a Kenne-Bell scoop which, I suspect, may have been manufactured by VFN. So, I can live without additional photos. I would like to take you up on your offer to take measurements, if you don’t mind. I’m looking for: 1 - The distance between the inner edges of the mounting flange or tabs, from side-to-side, about where you cut the hole in your hood 2 - The width of the scoop at its widest point, and 3 - The length of the scoop from the forward edge of the mounting flange or tabs (at the rear of the scoop base) to the front edge of the scoop itself, along the top of the hood, and... 4 - The width of the mounting flange or tabs. That should do it. Thanks again, Best regards,
Dan, here a few measurements, 1. Back edge of scoop to back end of hood is approx. 12". 2. length of scoop is approx. 19 1/2". 3. front opening width is approx 18 1/2". 4. mounting tabs are on the inside approx. 3/4" long, with 4 on each side and in the back.(spacing on the tabs most likely very because they are fiberglassed in when they make the scoop. I used a stainlees allen button headed type screw to fasten scoop. 5. Hole in hood is approx. 2 1/2" narrower than the shape of the scoop. (not round. I have a fiberglass hood. a round hole just doesn't look right to me) I made a template by tracing the scoop, then transferring that outline in approx. 2 1/2" and rounding the corners. If you need something else or I missed something let me know. Scott Pettit
Did anyone ever tried to make the Stage II scoop fit on a GS fiberglass VFN hood. Are the GS hoodscoops in the way? Which Stage II scoops are the best quality the VFN ones, Poston? more.. Robert
I've used a K-B and a VFN, didn't see a big difference. For my 67 I have it on a WS Racing fiberglass hood. Of course the 67 GS had bolt on fake scoops. I don't know what you would run into on a 70 up. I put the K-B on a 68, not problem Jim N.
Can anyone tell me, how much more clearance you get with the STAGE II scoop? I have a fiberglass hood, I need to put a 2"spacer under the carb. Without the spacer the carb just fits under the hood, this is without an aircleaner. tnx Robert
Robert, The VFN version of the scoop is 4" high and 18" wide. Sounds like you could locate it so the air cleaner could move into it about 2" or so (although I don't think that locating the air cleaner directly in the air stream is optimum). Does that help?
Dan, Yes that helps. When I'm racing I'm not using an aircleaner anyway, so thats allright. Sounds like it will fit easily. I mailed VFN on monday and they are on holiday. They will be back on wednesday this or next week. So this will be a winter project. Greetz Robert
I tried to go to WS Racing's website last night and it did not work. Doees anyone know if they are still in business. I have gotten several products from them and they have molds for my 67 front fenders and doors. Jim N.
My Carb top will be directly in the airstream also, when I add the 2 inch spacer, the airhorns will at least stick out one inch or 1/2 inch above the top of the hood. Is that an problem? I found a post here from someone that had an overlay you could print out I believe with the outer and inner sizes of the Stage 2 scoop. Can find that post anymore, was that one of you perhaps?
Kenne-Bell has their own patterns to make their own hood scoops, they didn't use VFN's, they made their own. I have the rights to use said patterns and can have a run of hood scoops made if people would be interested.
If anything, the VFN is a copy of the KB...We know the KB is a copy of the original. I would be in for one as the VFN is slightly different than the better KB...
Dan I have a fiber glass bolt on hood from WS racing with the VFN scoop and a custom dominator air pan. I'm going back to the stock hood for a more stealthy look so I don't want it any more. If you or anyone is interested let me know. In the meantime I'll figure out a price.
I don't know honestly, haven't called and asked. They probably would, I'd rather just call up and have some made rather than go through the effort to have the pattern modified to remove the name. :boring: In that case they would be a nostalgia item of sorts.
I'm with Guy on this one . . . PLEASE make some hood scoops! I'd for sure buy one, maybe two. If they're exact copies of the Kenne Bell ones, they'd be a heck of a lot better than the VFN ones. So where is the waiting list so I can sign up for one? :Brow:
