Variable Ratio Power Steering

On a 70 GSX would the N41 designation appear on the Broadcast Sheet, if the car came with the variable ratio gearbox? Is there any indication of the variable ratio on the Production Order Body-Final sheet? I have a "P" in the STRG. box.
I am just trying to determine what codes would have been included on the original Broadcast Sheet.
    Thanks.

    Art B.

    Art,

My X also has a "P", just as my GS 455 does. My understanding is that if an X was ordered with PS, it came with the quick box standard. The quick box was not an option on any other 70 GS's. Hope this helps.

    Eric:

That may be the way it worked, but the fast ratio PS was listed as an available option on the Wholesale Car Order sheet. With that, and option N41 listed for $121.12, I figured it was truely an available option. I can't see GM giving it away.

I have seen very few Broadcast Sheets, so I don't know if N41 appears there or not. Somehow, the line workers had to have a written instruction of some sort to add the fast ratio gearbox to the chassis that was going to be mated to a GSX body.

However, you may be right, because another thing I noticed is that PS is not listed as part of the GSX package. I have never seen a manual steering GSX, have you? Perhaps all GSX's came with PS and the fast ratio may be part of one of the Broadcast Sheet codes like GSX Group Y41.

I'm sure someone on the site knows the real answer. Thanks for your perspective.

    Hi Art,

Yes, it is listed as an option on the GSX wholesale form and it cost the buyer extra - but it is the only option if you wanted PS on a GSX. I'm sure Duane can clarify how the assemblers knew to install the N41 box if PS and WE1 (GSX) package were ordered togethor. I have heard of a manual steering GSX and believe there may be a couple in the GSX registry, but don't recall ever seeing one in person. I have looked at two real GSX Production Order Final Sheets, mine and my dad's, and both have just the P designation. I assumed this was the sheet you were referring to as the broadcast sheet. If you search on the board here there may have been a previous discussion on this as well.

    Best Regards,

    Eric

look at your steering box. Is the little oval yellow sticker still There? It will have a two letter code. One code is for regular and the other is for N41. Let me know waht it says and I can look it up unless you already know it.

    Dave:

My yellow sticker is long gone, but the gearbox is a variable ratio as determined during an overhaul.

Was the 70 X available with either manual, regular PS or variable ratio PS?

If so, how would the line worker know which box to install?
