Does it help to lower oil consumption using valve stem seals on the exhaust valve stems? I know there isn't one on these engines from the factory. Thanks. Robbie
If guides are worn it can help but they get hotter than intake so std rubber ones don't last. Use teflon....
The reason Buick did not use seals on the exhaust guides is the reasoning the guides are not under any vacuum as the intake guides are on the downward intake stroke, that and the reasoning the exhaust guides would benefit from a BIT of oil. I run seals on both guides, no harm in doing so. As long as the exhaust guides are not beyond spec. you can leave ‘em off, but it’s beneficial to have the guides cut for seals.
Yes I run seals on exhaust guides. The oil that sneaks down the exhaust guides doesn’t get consumed in the cylinder, it just burns/smokes in the exhaust ports. So I don’t know if you call that “consumption” or waste, LOLOL Either way, it’s a good idea to run them on exhaust guides.
Understood. I remember when i changed out the old intake valve seals for new ones it had no effect on oil consumption which i thought it would have. On my VW 4 cylinder daily driver it had a huge effect on oil consumption.
I didn’t mention this, in order to run seals on the exhaust guides you have To have the guides machined for the seals, IIRC, the guides are taller on the exhaust.
