Used Pistons OK? Part Number?

Discussion in 'Street/strip 400/430/455' started by jamyers, Nov 13, 2003.

I'm considering some used 455 pistons, if they're early high-compressions, and was wondering what the thinking was on using used pistons, if it's ok, or something to avoid, etc.

Also, the part number looks to be: 1231733, but I'm running into dead ends identifying them. Napa's books list them for pretty much every year / model 455 ever made, which is no help.

Anybody know what they are, comp ratio, etc? What's a 'fair' price range?

    Thanks,

    James

I don't know part #'s, etc...but i do know that used pistons are probably cast, and cast pistons are inferior to forged. Forged aftermarket pistons should have it all over anything used and/or cast.

I know price is often a big factor, but I really can't recommend using old parts when new, forged pistons are readily available, and really not that pricey...385 bucks for 10.1:1 forged pistons with no notch (TA Performance). Personally I would not consider old parts ever again, unless there was no other alternative anywhere in the world, I've just had too many experiences with used parts breaking.

Also, a big thing is: if the block has to be over-bored, those used pistons are a no-no, you must get oversized pistons no matter what, and that means new pistons.

I've been known to cut a corner or two in the past to save a buck... but I would NEVER use used pistons. That sounds like an easy way to ruin thousands of $$'s worth of other good engine parts. Maybe if pistons were $2,000, I'd think about trying to use old ones, but for $400 it's a no-brainer.

Yup, you're right, I'd be penny-wise and pound-foolish going that route...but it's hard having all those Scottish ancestors!
