Used lifters on used cam?

I have a solid flat tappet cam I would like to use , but I don't have any lifters that came from it. I do have a set that was mixed up in a box on another cam. They all have good crown on them, both the cam I want to use and the lifters are well run.

I read a thread on here that someone said that you can throw any used lifter in any bore, even on a cam they have never been on and you are just as safe as anything.

I want to be sure i have it straight before i start busting knuckles.

This is a recipe for disaster. Buying a new cam and lifters will be far cheaper than rebuilding the engine due to a flat cam. Jim Burek

    just do it

Ask johnno about used lifters, he had some noisy lifters and wanted to go racing so i had a set of used lifters so we replaced the drivers side lifters and the noise went away a week later the other side started making noise, so he put in the rest of the lifters i gave him and the noise is gone. if the lifters look good its up to you as long as the crowns still there id throw them in. it matters how much you want to spend. later john

It is just going to be a bracket mule

Thank you guys for the imput. Mike, I will try to give you a call tomorrow.

It seems like that since both surfaces are work hardened, and as long as you get the lifter to spin in the bore properly, it would be good. I'd be nervous as hell putting a set of todays lifters on a new cam much less an old one. These are some good Johnson shell-type lifters almost new, and the cam is a 20+ yr old Lunati SPJ 3/8 mile asphalt track cam with about two seasons on it. The motor itself is a nice loose claimer long block. If I scatter it (which I shouldn't really) , I'll rebuild.

The main thing is that I get the car (a Ford) quick enough to sell for as little as I can pour in. I want to build a G-body with a 455 and glide from the proceeds.
