Hi Folks:

I recently became the guardian of a very nice 1967 Buick Electra 225 Limited Coupe.the body is nearly perfect with original paint. only blemish is on the left rear quarter panel where the previous guardians wife hooked the bumper with her pickup. the bumper is, of course, misshapen, as well. that is no real concern as both issues are easily repaired. but the original paint is UGLY!! anyway, it is to me, i can't stand egg shell white. the interior needs a complete restoration, so i was thinking of changing the color of the car to one i like more. i am thinking a midnight blue metallic with red and gold highlights. and a black interior with red and gold highlights, too.

here is a pic of the car currently: Buick.jpg

i would appreciate any advice on the matter. i really want the car to look nice, but i don't want to harm it's value, either.

I plan on modernizing the breaks and suspension as well as replace all current light bulbs with L.E.D. bulbs for safety and visability.

Ipersonally don't like red and blue together... unless they have white in between them . They dark blue and gold would look excellent in my opinion. As far as the value of the car... you'll just have to accept whatever you put into the car you'll never see back out of it. I see this is your first post... welcome to the board and you should start a thread in the 'wet behind the ears section' telling us a little about yourself and your ride. Good luck with your new ride and keep us updated. :TU:

The bottom line is it's your car. If you're more interested in the value of it than you are in enjoying it then why not just sell it now? In my experience we rarely get our investment in these cars back. Over time we spend plenty of money on them, most often more than they're ever going to be worth. Why? Because we want them they way we want them, not so much the way the factory built them. Often someone will ask me how much money I have in mine. Well, first of all it's none of their business, but honestly, I never kept track because I don't care. So many people get so caught up in what they consider their "investment" rather than their hobby that they never have any fun with their cars.

    Thank you, folks.

what you are saying is pretty much what i thought. I would like for the car to be valuable, but like you said, i want to be able to enjoy it.

to 65Skylark300. tje reason for the color choices is because i like blue and the old lady likes red. the gold is intended to break them up as you mentioned. on top of that, the blue i have in mind looks like a plain gloss black, but when the light hits it at just right angle, the midnight blue metallic jumps out at you. it was the color of the motorcycle i had and loved.

I see, I wasn't thinking quite that dark, but the blue paint with red and gold can look very good and so can just blue and red... do what you want with the car and enjoy it :TU:. Make sure to share some pictures:kodak:!

Can't go wrong painting it a more pleasing color especially if it is one that was available on that model from the factory in 67. This would increase value IMO. So take a look at the paint colors that were available on that car. There were a small number of what I would consider really attractive colors in 67. They weren't so popular back then but have become more desirable today.

Having just brought a 67 GS 400 back to life after 161K miles I know for sure I will never get the investment back as I am upside down probably $10K but part of the reason is I don't have time to do a lot of the work or it needed special expertise IE: A/C installation. I am seeing $75 - 90/hr shop charges these days so it adds up real quick when you start from the front bumper and rebuild/replace all running gear including full engine/transmission rebuild.

If you Google 67 Buick paint colors or research this site you can probably find the paint sample sheet to look at and they are normally on Ebay for sale. Miy 67 is Apple Red, the 67 official red color.

Now the 1932 Buick below is another story, I call it my rolling 401K, never to be recovered at full value of what is invested but then again I too did not add up the receipts because I did not want to have a case of permanent depression. Love the car and show it all around the country at national meets and Concours.

Good luck, the two door is an attractive vehicle.:grin:

With these cars as long as you don't get too crazy with the paint scheme. That pink and blue Riv that someone posted up comes to mind. The car is gonna speak for itself. Original color or not I haven't seen a bad looking Buick.

This is great advice!!!! My goal is to never do another car that needs painted but if I have a weak moment and do find myself in that position, I will build a paint booth and learn to do it myself or I won't do it at all.

thanks for all the great comments, folks.

I will do the research to see what colors were used in 67, but i think i am going to go ahead with the midnight Blue. or maybe just black. everything looks good in black.

i did find the 67 paint chart. and after looking at it, i am even more inclined to go with the Midnight Blue as it was an available color for that year. but at this point, anything will look better than that Ivory.

I chose Chrysler code PC9, Jewel Blue Metallic for my 67. It's similar to the Diplomat Blue offered in earlier years, but with more metal flake. The stock midnight blue GM offered in 1967 was too flat for my tastes. Combine that with a dark interior, and you will be styling.

Only if the body is arrow straight, and there's a lot of square footage on the sides of a `67 Electra so I'd be careful with the real deep colors unless you plan to spend 1/2 of the rest of your life block sanding it straight. I've seen cars so wavy that they wouldn't even look good in flat black.

Color change is not as simple as one would think. Not just a sand and spray situation, as the original paint is lacquer and would need to be removed prior to bodywork and repaint with modern paint. That is of course, if you are going to do it correctly. Nice boat, I owned a 71 225 and I drove it everywhere, til it donated its powerplant to an a-body. Good luck and ENJOY! Jim/Rott

Black looks great when it's clean. The downside, of course, is that's usually only within the first few seconds of cleaning it. I think some colors lend themselves well to certain body styles, others not so much. I'm not a big fan of red but there are a few cars that don't look good in anything but red. Black is no different. I like my gold Buick, it's almost a perfect match to dust so I don't have to spend much time cleaning it and it still looks good
