Ugh. Well, I'm employeed again. But at a job that's beneath me for a 33% pay cut.

The job is still in IT, but there's no real hardware or software growth.

And the salary is a full 33% less than what I was making. With the kids back in daycare/after school care, the net will be the same as it is now on unemployment with the kids out of daycare/after school care. There's a pisser, huh? My situation is no better financially than being on unemployment. Can you tell I'm overjoyed. Man, the things we do because they are right just sometimes make you think.

But, the office is only 10 minutes from the house.

And I get to go to NYC twice a month (How about lunch Alan?!?!?!).

Man, it is a bitter pill to swallow. But in an industry where jobs are non-existant, I suppose I can work this job and still look. I hate like hell to take a job with the full intention of leaving them hanging in the not-so-distant future, but what else can I do...

    yay. i'm employed again...

Employment is good - Congratulations Jeff!

I'm also in the market for a new job, and my first offer was such a low ball, it was an insult. Really, consider 33% good (mine was much, much, greater than a 33% salary reduction :eek2: ), and at least your only 10 minutes away. I declined the offer and am still seeking employment.

Glad you're back on your feet :TU:

Congrats Yards - its close to home, you get to visit (my turn to buy lunch ?) AND you get to fake Sincerity ???

What else could you ask for ??? Seriously.....better to work than collect. Well.....OK, collecting is fine for a summer vacation but you've had your fun now

And,You never know.....I had a friend who did pretty much the same (took a lower position 'cause nothing else was happening) and within a year he was running the IT shop - of course your future boss would have to keel over on the conference room table for it to be the same but Hey !!! Something to look foward to !!!

  6. Ouch, that pay cut is a tough one! I'll bet it feels good to be working again though. Maybe it can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things :TU: I would love to find a different place to work, but after 14yrs here, it would be hard to find a job locally that wouldn't also require a pay cut, and I won't do that.

Marco, are you without a job now too? Or just looking while you work?

    Hi David -

Essentially, I've been told (two weeks ago) that I will be laid-off this quarter. It stinks to know the ax is falling, but I don't yet know when it will hit my neck

The job search gods have not been gracious thus far...

Well, geez Yardley, how would you feel to know that the better you do, the faster you will work yourself out of a job. That's the boat I am in. Environmental reclamation. Living in a nowhere town so you can't buy a home, and don't know how long you will have a job beyond a couple months for sure. That's what I've been living the last 5 years plus being laid off once in-between. But hey, its a pretty fun and interesting job while it lasts.

    Well Jeff-

I will say a hearty congrats on finding a job. I think the fact that you even found one in this economy speaks to the level of your skills. It ain't easy out there, as you obviously know.

If the money isn't as good as you'd like, hopefully the environment will be excellent. And like others said, stick with it and see what comes. You never know when opportunity will Knock!

Best of Luck in your New Job! :TU:

The economy is doing quite well, but more and more jobs are leaving this country. It started with labor, and now it is moving up the chain.:(

Thanks everyone. Hope you get it all sorted out soon Marco.

I know I should be grateful that I have found a job, but the job and the pay are where I was 7 years ago in my industry. And at age 43 I expected to keep moving forward in my career, not backward.

But maybe something will come of it.

OK Rick... Who else is in Manhattan?! Please let me and Rick and Alan know. We can get together for a lunch once a month or something!

I didn't mean to be whining, but guess I was too.
yeah, I'm afraid I'll be where you are when this job is up. Use this chance to get your "edge" back and and it'll help you network into something better.

I just saw a movie on the Comedy Central called "Office Space". You NEED to see this movie if you haven't already. It describes what you're talking about and the job you're talking about to a tee!

Comedy Central started showing that movie about 5 times a day it seems while I was in college, and since I was a Comp Sci. major, it fit right in. I think the scene where they take revenge on the printer is the best.

Oh, and congrats Jeff on the job. Maybe I'll be next. Life in the deli dept. just gets worse and worse.

    Yardley,
Glad to hear that you found something. Don't worry about the pay cut... now that you are working you'll probably have an easier time finding something better. It seems jobs are like women, they want you more if someone else is interested in you. If nothing else you can become the guy that they can't live without and then, figuratively of course, hold the gun to their head.
Good luck at the new job.:beer

Congratulations on the job Jeff, its been awhile, huh! This just makes you more marketable for when better jobs start to open up. Get those job skills polished (on their nickel  ) and enjoy the short commute. My job is great with good pay but I spend 2+ hours a day in traffic hell :af: .

Do you have one of those FSA accounts where you can pay the daycare with pretax dollars? Ask about it!
