Hi, I am trying to maximize my knowledge of these trannie codes for 1965. Here is what I have so far. Not sure if this is accurate, and positive its not complete!!! Any other combos to add? I did not include the BU since it would have a different bellhousing. Anybody know if there was another code if the 3.91 gears were ordered? BJ- 401 LT 3.07 axle BR- 401 LT 3.23 axle Any other for 401's? 3.42 axle? BN - 425 LW 4-bbl., 3.07 axle/also seen on a 425 LX two-carbs 3.07 open axle(Wildcat) BT - 425 LW 4-bbl., 3.23 axle ?? - 425 LW 4-bbl, 3.42 axle- is this a BS? BQ - 425 LX two carbs, 3.07 axle ?? - 425 LX two carbs, 3.23 axle BS - 425 LX two-carbs, Riviera, 3.42 posi Thanks, Snowed in and frozen in Cincinnati,
Yes! All automatic ST400 codes. ST300 for the GS is NK . New Question-in '66 did the GS (Skylark) use the ST400 or carry over the ST300? ..Thanks,
Ted, Ok, just checkin. I am almost sure GM carried over the ST300 for the GS in 66. Not snowed in, but frozen. Mark
The Buick Chassis Manual would have that info....look in the ST400 section, codes and applications are listed. Axle ratio is not a consideration. Here are the codes for 1966: BR...401 BT...425 BU...340 BS...425 Wildcat and Riviera GS Sorry, I don't have any 1965 info here. The Skylark GS (unfortunately) used the ST300 trans in 1966. As far as I know, the only Nailheads to use the ST300 were the 65-66 Skylark GS's... Buick went to alot of expense ( a new case)to put that tranny in so few cars....wish they had just used the ST400, would've saved us from having to do the swap ourselves! The '67 GS400 got the ST400...
Unfortunately rhe 65 chassis manual does not have the same application info. That was the first place I looked! From my cars; all '65sI have not changed trannies-I suppose the serial #s or production dates should be studied before I say that these were definately the original transmissions. The reason for asking the question in the first place was to try to have the transmission match the application, and I have found more questions than answers! I still have more letters than applications if they are set the same as '66.) Riv, 401, 3.23; BR Wildcat NOM,(suspect it was a LT), 3.07: BJ Wildcat LX, 3.07: BN Wildcat NOM(suspect it was a LW), 3.07: BT Riv, LX; (engine only, no rear)BN And the Riv LX (GS) 3.42 is supposed to be a BS. There is probably no/not much difference in these trannies.(yeah, the BS is special!) I just like knowledge. Truly this is esoteric, but that is why I am posting here. There is more great stuff to be known about these cars than any 1 person could know, but this is the place where a lot of the people that may have that knowledge are "hanging out". Come forth, keepers of esoterica! The secrets are safe with us! If we tell anybody they will fall asleep instantly! Cheers!
Found more! Okay, here is some more info I found in the 1965 service information letters... Transmission section: Not much help here, just a listing of codes without application, until I came to the speedometer gear usage chart! Here is the breakdown: -BJ.....2.78, 3.07, 3.58, 3.91, rear-end gear ratios -BN....same as above -BQ....same as above -BR....3.23, 3.36, 3.42 ratios -BS....3.42 ratio -BT....3.23, 3.36, 3.42 ratio. -BU (4500 series- small block Lesabre?) Everything posted so far fits the above, except for the Wildcat with BT trans and 3.07 rear.... Not that it helps, but....some of these ratios were only available as a posi in 1966, and the '66 BS, and BT used a different governor.
