Does any one know what what the torque ratings for the M20, M21, M22 are?

Richmond has listed their ratings of the super t10
300 to 375 depending on first gear ratio's.

    Thanks Al.

From what I understand, they can handle way more than the t-10. The muncies have better cases & handle up to 500-600 lbs-ft of torque. I know my muncie m20 & my friend's m20 handle our cars at over 500 lbs-ft of torque. T-10's are to be used on mild 350's not 455's.

If you ran them hard they came apart back then. A friend blew the side of the case off his 442.

My experience has been a cast iron case T-10 will outlive a Muncie. Muncie and T-10 aluminum cases are the weak point.

Is the M22 tougher/more robust than the M20/M21?
The M22 has the gears cut at a different angle is that the difference?

Launched mine at 5000 rpms and snaped the ears off my M20. Went to auto after that.

Gears are the only difference between the 22 and the 20/21. They are cut to produce more gear mesh which cuts down on end loading. Not really an increase in strength though.

Yes. The less helical cut of the teeth reduces the tendancy of the aluminum case to stretch. It also reduces friction and heat. There was an article in Car Craft a few years back about an aftermarket company building the Super Muncie. Main emphasis was to throw away the crappy stock porous case and house the gears in something that won't blow open like a big zit.

Super T10 trannies came in both aluminum and iron cases with nickel gears. Borg Warner offered iron since it won't stretch and deflect as much as the aluminum castings. The aftermarket replacement was sold under the Power Brute name. These were all cast iron cases. Here is some interesting reading regarding both.

Gear ratio. The M-20 is a wide ratio trans. M21 has steeper 1st gear.

The M22 gear sets also have a higher nickel alloy.

I have a Muncie super case and iron mid plate from www.5speeds.com. The case is thicker and has a higher nickel content than the stock Muncie. You have to run one of their larger front bearings, but it makes it pretty stout compared to the stock muncie. My engine makes @550 ft/lbs of torque and I have run it at the strip with drag radials and have had no issues in @ 4 years.

Scott did you re-use your gears or did you spring for new ones?

I ended up buying the Italian...oooh fancy! made countershaft/input shaft and 1st and 2nd gear. I reused the 3rd and reverse gears. They seem to be very nice pieces. I hammer on my car every time I take it out and I have not heard it complain yet. I plan on taking the trans out to do a few other things to the car soon so I will pull the cover to see if everything is ok.
