Took it for a ride this early morning, it was about 38 deg, so I drove it easy till it warmed up. The bog is definitely gone:TU: So far its not leaning out when at WOT like it was with the Q-Jet. Im going to drive it more tomorrow, Im seeing how the drivability is right now more than all out performance, so far it seems more responsive than the Q-Jet even tho the AED is 850 cfm.
Good going Mark! Think you will be pleased / enjoy that carb, especially tuning it to your needs.:Brow: Oh, and what made you decide to dump the q-jet.
Awesome going Mark! I bet theirs a petty good difference between the two carbs . Did happen to watch your wide band through the rpm range? Could you elaborate on the numbers I'm assuming this carb is right out of the box. Bet you can't wait to get to the track.
Well, as much as I still like my Q-Jet, I believe the Q-Jet is better suited to dual plane intakes. I took the plunge and went DP, and 850 cfm If the Q-Jet had an accelerator pump shot for the secondaries, all would be good, but I don't want to have my Q-Jet modified to where its only good for the single plane. Another thing I've noticed is the square bore is more responsive, whereas a spreadbore when you gradually apply more throttle than the smaller primaries are capable of providing, theres like a plateau/delay before the secondaries start their contribution to power. The square bore is like having two big 2 bbl carbs.
Big difference:eek2: Whereas the Q-Jet would show 15 and then --- on the meter when going WOT The AED shows 12.9 to 13.4 when going WOT, with no bog/hesitation Im going to drive it more and get a better feel for things before making any changes, if any. I still idle at 700-750 rpm in gear, 800-850 outta gear Stock jetting for the AED 850 is 82 front 92 rear Throttle response is awesome, as accurate and sensitive as the Q-Jet, so far so good:TU:
Ahhh, finally got the right carb on that SP3. I knew it was going to run better and with No Bog. See, there is no sense cutting out the intake to mount a Q-Jet, the Dbl Pumper works better. Nice choice in carb Mark, looks real nice on there. Mart was saying a Corvette drop base air cleaner works well. May have to inquire with him on that. How do you like the trans, did you see Vince has his son working in the shop now? 3rd generation there. You should have still gotten the 2004r trans you would have liked it better. Did he still have the 68 Mopar in there? Next up, the track. Opens on the 15th
Cool, thanks Guy, I've been meaning to check the opening dates for Norwalk and Thompson. Trans feels solid, Im confident knowing a "Buick guy" built my trans:grin: Only quirk Im having is for regular cruising when you want it to auto downshift, it feels like the carb reaches WOT before the end of throttle cable travel, therefore it doesn't pull on the detent cable enough to force the downshift. Im assuming I can adjust that stupid clip by the gas peddle, slide it forward, then mash the gas for it to self adjust, correct? Anyhow, my 3000 rpm cruise (68 mph) on the highway my A/F is showing low to mid 12's WOT shows low to mid 11's Sound ok or a tad rich? I've touched nothing but the idle screw so far.
Yes on the cable. It's easy. That does sound rich to me. According to what I've read you will make more power in the 12.5 to even 13 range at WOT. Cruise too can lean out a lot more as well. I would drop two jet sizes front and rear and see where that puts you. On the turbo car, all I ever had to do was change jet sizes to get where I wanted.
Try what Jays says. If that doesn't work well for you, move the throttle cable to top hole. It will give you more travel and less effort. Jets seem fat. You can see where mine are at, but I'm still dialing in some. Vette drop base is the best. Fits all carbs well and clears linkages perfectly.
Traction is fine, so far, but I haven't mashed it from a low roll, cruise power is great give it throttle it accelerates, no lag, bog or anything
No problem. Take that car out from a 10 to 20 roll and nail it!:TU: Don't drive it like your wife does.:3gears::laugh::laugh:
Yes sir....everything fits under the GS hood. I've even ran a 4" filter element, along with 2" spacer, in / with the Vette drop base cleaner. You try cramming the stock dbl snorkle air cleaner on there and you will smash the foams big time, plus it doesn't drop down enough.
AWESOME! I was running my GS air cleaner set up with the K&N element and K&N Extreme top with no foams, but even at that, the left front edge of the fiberglass "ram air" box was rubbing on the inner structure of the hood from the engine torqueing over, don't wanna ruin my air cleaner set up, so that's awesome about the Corvette drop base with the stock hood AND being able to use a 4" element if I wanted! The SP3 doesn't seem that much taller than the Stage 1 intake, but apparently it is!
