I personally think I'm getting a deal to re-paint back to original color and fix body damage by replacing driver door and body work on a 40 year old car for 1500! but i just wanna ask the experts is this a deal for a paint job with body damage! is it too little and i should be expecting a lackluster job? this is in los angeles california! i think that should be taken into consideration as well! thank you for any input ! i would add pix but i'm on a work CPU

That is very inexpensive. And you usually get what you pay for. Did you check out the shop? References? See their work?

Hello and welcome from Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Bodywork and paint for 1500.00 is a cheap price anywhere IMO.
But it usually comes with cheap work. I dont know about the local prices in your area, extent of your damage, the person or shop doing the work, materials being used, years or experience, etc,,, your expectations and plans, but I wouldnt be expecting a whole lot for that price.

And tell us a little bit more about your 40 year old Buick and your plans for it.
We have many well respected restorers here that gladly share knowledge of their trade.

For 1500, it will probably look better before than after. The materials alone would probably exceed $1500, so im not sure how the shop wpould be doing it for that.

Thank you everyone Its a 69 buick skylark custom! blew the motor so it has a pretty much stock rebuilt 73 455! door is unrepairable! and this shop! is a Body shop/salvage yard they have their own parts so that's how he said he's able to give a great price! and before he said 1500 he was talking about how much work it would be! so i dunno what all exactly i'm getting, HE said he'd put the door on body work and paint 1500 will find out today the rest of the details! i ordered the door so he basicially just has to put that one on and then the body work and paint! I'll keep my fingers crossed!

plans for the future a g-machine! wouldnt even be painting with out the body damge! next planing for a posi and disc brakes! maybe bucket seats now that
    it will be painted

I smell a "mask and repaint" with single stage paint in your future. Be careful, like the others stated, you get what you pay for. Personally, I would not touch the car for $1500.00 and I am cheaper than a lot of the other guys around here. Good quality materials will run you in the $1000 dollar range. A lot of people dont realize the amount of time it takes to do a quality repaint. It can be very time consuming to do it right. Do it right and do it once. I would suggest checking out some of the work this shop has done before you make any decisions.

    WAY to cheap!

You have to ask them what they are doing, and what they are using.

How are they fixing the damage?? What brand and type of paint??

Labor and materials to do my hood and fenders were 2K. I got an Econo Bake paint job on the Bug yrs back and they didnt even wipe it down. just painted over the dirt and called me to come n get it.

you will have a $1500 disappointment.

Do the math. The body labor rate in CA is at least $50 hr. Normally at least 30hrs of paint labor for entire car. That's $1500. Not to include any body work + material and that thing called tax. Materials would be about $1000 on the low end for good stuff.

Around my neck of the woods you can't get even a respectable paint job less that 5-6 grand and that's not that nice or perfect job.

Maybe there is another car they need parts for and yours will be the donor car or swap vins. I wouldn't be taking my car to a "salvage" yard/body shop at anytime. You may never see your car again. Oops it got crushed the end loader driver did not know any better.

    Just a thought.

I had a freind redo his cutlass for $2000. He knew the guy well, and had work done from him lots before. We knew he was slow. So he got the car in November and the guy told him it would be done its body work in 2 weeks, then repaint in 2 more weeks.

We figured it would be done in April some time. He replaced quarters, redid the fenders, got rid of the rust on the rockers and replaced a couple of body mounts. Then he sanded down some of the car. This was all in 2 weeks. Then he lost steam, and basically left the car untouched for 6 months after that.

Finally around august we were all fed up, so he "just got it done".... Looks great from 20 ft, but if youre up close it becomes real apparent that it was a cheap paint job.

Are you sure that isn't just a labor cost? That would still be cheap.

    $1500 with body work? :puzzled:

Nah. I think this will end up being a case of "Cheap is expensive".

$1500 is WAY too cheap!!! i paid $3000 for my paint last year, its not perfect by far (but if it was i would be too affraid to drive it) but i believe that the job was done the correct way as i was at the shop every other day for 6 months.

i took the car totally stripped (drove in there sitting on a milk crate)
the shop took off the doors/ fenders/ hood/ trunk and painted all jams, rebuilt the door hinges and installed new bushings between the body and the frame. also i had them do some work around the back window while all of the glass was out. all of that plus the multiple coats of factory sunburst yellow followed by the "factory" skylark 350 stripes in black (which he burried in the clear) and the coats of clear and i believe that i got off cheap for $3000.

listen to the peoples opinions on here when they tell you that $1500 is too cheap and you probably wont be happy with the work.

    regards

Interestingly enough, I paid $1500 for body work and paint on my Skylark 10 years ago. Big dent just behind the passenger's door, dents in the roof, dinged up right front fender. He stripped it, including the chrome, and did a two-part clear coat paint job, including the jambs. Came out real nice. Only two issues- it wasn't the colors I asked for, (GM #11 white for the roof, and '95 GM Laguna for the body, he did it some other white and a color I'll call indigo, because I bought touchup paint and that's what it's called), and it took him 5 months. In retrospect, I guess I got a pretty good deal. It needs it all again, after people taking potshots at it and my kid striking a light pole in a parking lot. Hood's white and the fender's yellow, now. I have to do it this time, my cash flow is pretty low.
