I am considering spray dye as an alternative to a new interior in my 72 Skylark/GS Clone. The current interior is in excellant shape. I just do not like the saddle brown color, so I would like to change to black. I read a article in this month Hemming Muscle Car magazine about dyeing the interior items. The company is called justdashes.com and they can set you up with a kit to re-dye your interior. It has everything you need to do the job. I know the main thing is to get the stuff clean from the oil, dirt, smoke, ect., before applying a color. I know some of you guys swear by SEM, it is a top notch product also. Can anyone tell me if they have had success at re-dyeing an interior, has the dye held up? Does it rub off on the seats and arm rest? Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks,
i redyed my door panels and rear side panels and windlace from sandlewood to black. i used sem and it holds up great. i actually replaced the seat covers, in black when u dye the seats covers, u have to be sure the vinyl is very clean. when u spray on the dye, be sure to open the seams/pleats/edging to obtain a thorough covering with the dye. if u use sem, just follow the instructions. i have heard of guys using lacquer paint on panels & seat covers with goo results.
Did you dye your interior yet? I am planning on doing this very same thing to my '72... does anyone have before/after pictures?
I dyed the back seat of a 71 custom that was saddle to black. I used duplicolor interior dye and they came out awesome. I didn't know about sem at the time, but the duplicolor worked great. As to how it holds up, I couldn't say. I sold the seat to a friend and the back seat will probably never have anyone sit in it.
I have had excellent results using SEMS Landau Black on my interior. I have changed it from saddle brown to black. I've used it on all of my plastic and rubber trim pieces, visors, dash, front and rear seats, mini-console, door panels and door carpet. I must say all of these things look brand new, even my buddies think I had the seats and door panels re-upholstered. I have not install any of the items yet, so I do not know how they will hold up to the wear and tear. After getting a quote on a new headliner, I am now going to use SEMS on my old headliner.
I always use interior lacquer on the plastic parts including the dash pad. Is your dash non AC? Too bad as I just started painting a mint black non AC dash pad saddle for my car. I love the saddle. Black will fry your ass in the summer sun. The interior lacquer works so well on the dash pad you cannot tell it was black on the underside where I tested it. It flexes with the pad and appears part of it now. I used factory service bulletins from GM to paint all the stuff. The kick panels are polypropylen and should have a palstic adhesion promoter sprayed or paint may run. The dash pad is actually made from soft ABS plastic not vinyl. I am going to make a post on the factory method to paint all interior parts. I just painted my entire interior except the seats and they look factory new. If you paint the dash pad make sure it is flat. There should be no glare. GM called for "0" gloss there.
These are some of the polypropylene parts I painted. The kick panels were actually reddish brown real nice ones I got from a junkyard 71 Cutlass. The door trim was black and the seat parts are my re-done saddle originals.
This is the blcak dash I am painting saddle. The color looks factory applied. I did all this stuff with a little Preval sprayer. I am not going to finish the top of the dash until I get a real gun. There is just too much area to cover. I would not give Juts Dashes A nickl after I saw the results I can get with the interior lacquer.
The door trim is actually vinyl plastic. I did a flame test to test it. It is described in the GM bulletins. No primer is needed for the vinly plastic or the dash only the poly p.
i have had to re-dye the area in the upper door panel, driver's side, where my arm rests when i have the window down. otherwise, the sem dye is permanent. i intend to dye my black kick original panels as they are faded.
I have seen many kick panels with peeling "dye" The Laquer becomes part of the kick panel if done right.
Preparing to Vinyl dye my seats and door panels! Just finished doing my seat belts with Rit dye. Here is before and after shots!!
It would be nice to have an article with the proper products to use on which parts. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<o></o> Nelson<o></o>
I used DuPont Vinyl fabric dye on the material, and krylon trim paint on the metal part. First I cleaned it with Green Works all-purpose cleaner and a Mr.Clean magic eraser. These are a spare pair out of my parts car.
