I need some help on tires. I have a 3/4 ton Yukon XL with 8 lug 16 inch alum. wheels. I need new tires for it as the factory supplied Firestone CRAP is now worn out. The factory tires are 245/70/16 and look WAY TOO SMALL for this big vehicle.

Here is some additional info that may affect the decision.

I do a lot of hauling and towing with this vehicle. Although I don't live where it snows, I do venture North over the holidays to Snow Country. I do see a lot of rain. I don't do the off road thing. Noise, ride quality, and tread life are important! I also want a tire that looks like it belongs on the vehicle, unlike the current tires which are dwarfed by it.

    Any recommendations?

Hey Alan, I run Goodyear Wrangler AT/S tires, 265/75r16 on my 01' suburban, Load range D. nice tread pattern, quite, good life on tread, have about 35,000 on them now and will run them thru this winter and next summer before I will replace them, I tow a 26 ft trailer in summer and a 24 ft trailer in the winter for snowmobiles. 3/4 ton suburban, eight lug wheels as well. the tires were two sizes up from factory I believe and fill out the wheel well just about right, without looking to big, I dont do the off road thing either, hth, Bruce

Consumer Reports is the only place I know that does an objective job ranking tires for noise, longevity, traction etc. Their Nov 2002 edition rates best for all season: Dunlop Sp Sport AZ ($70) for the size tested over Michelin MXV4 Plus ($120), then Continental, Kelly etc. Goodyear Eagle LS ranked next to last.

For H rated winter tires designed for speeds up to 130mph, it is Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-2($132) then Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 ($126) a close second , then Pirelli(155) etc. Michelin was last.

    welp..

    I've had 3 Burb's and 2 Tahoes......
I run Michelin LTX-M & S on every one of them
    265-75R16
C range on the Tahoe's and E's on the "Burbs

You will NOT get stuck with these. I have had these on ice when the salt trucks weren't around and i was the ONLY vehicle out of the snow lodge's 3 years in a row, and mine have all been 2 wd vehicles....

    Al,

I buy one particular tire only, Michelin LTX 235/85R16 in the "E" load range. This is a commercial tire and not many people stock 'em. They usually go for around $160-$180 each, but it's a 10 ply tire and I've had 4 sets on 4 different Ford Powerstroke F350's and have gotten not less than 75,000 out of each. Two sets went to 90,000(after I sold the truck). What convinced me was some @$$#*!& threw commercial roofing nails on the road to my hunting lease and I picked up 11 in the front and 9 in the rear. The rear tires were the Michelin's and not one punctured. It completely flattened the nails. The front tires were Continental's and every nail punctured.:stmad: They're a little pricey but last. They make 'em in M/S(mud & snow) and A/S(all season).

    tires

    Allen,

If you think your tires are too small and want to upgrade them thats fine. BF Goodrich has really nice rubber, the All Terrains are very stout on the full size SUV's.....BUT! if you do put bigger tires on you must recalibrate the ECM from the PCM to change your shift points for the bigger tires. This in turn also effects speedometer readings, this also has to be calibrated to your application. Unless you have Hypertech's Power Programmer 3, you must bring your vehicle to a dealer...$$$.

But after all that's done the bigger tires will really set the truck on:af:

    Good Luck

    Re: tires

    Marc,

Does this apply only if you get something like a 17 in place of 16 inch tires? I'm sticking with a 16 incher, but want a wider, bigger looking 16 inch tire. Or does that not matter?

    Thanks,

    Alan

only going a size or two larger in overall height will not adversly affect the computer. I lifted my 99 Dakota and run a 33/12.50/15 BFG All Terrain with no noticable effect on the way the truck drives as far as the computer controlling the trans, etc....... The stock tire size was 31/10.50/15.

    ok..

Alan going from a 245 to a 265 will slow the speedo down 2 mph across the board.

HOWEVER, your speedo is prolly 2 mph FAST anyways when new. So, it's a wash.

265-75's with an E is what you need. We just did this this week on a 2001 C2500 'Burb using the Michelin M & S replacing the 'Stoner ATX's.... and it was a HUGE night and day improvement.

J The 'Stoner's have stiffer sidewalls, but the ride change was phenominally better.

    tire taste

    Allen,

You could for instance put a 17" rim and tire combo and still end up with the same overall size as factory. If you want talk with your local tire guy and he'll set you up good. Tell him exactly what you want, and a good technician will accomodate your needs.

It's all about personal taste and the way you use your vehicle i.e off-road, performance, trailing etc....

One way or another I hope you find what your looking for
