hey guys, thanks for letting me be a part of your board. i just bought a 1970 Buick skylark custom. all original, with only 22,000 miles. it has the factory 14 inch wheels on it. the car looks like a grocery getter right now, it has tiny whitewall tires. my question is, what is a nice size tire i can use to beef up the stance and fill the wheel well. or in order to get a nice fat tire, am i gonna have to go to a bigger rim. i think right now it has 205/14 's on it. i want to really beef it up. thanks
unless u are into the retro rims - 16-22" , personally have two preferences. there are 15x7 buick rallyes with 245r60 (or 255R60 if your suspension is new) or 15x7 cragar ss with the abovementioned tires .
We had really good luck with Coker Tire. :TU: Wheel & Rim combo's in various sizes available. http://www.cokertire.com/store/customer/home.php?cat=346 Sounds like a nice "lark", welcome to the party :beer D.
I have a set of 4 15X7 Buick rally wheels with center caps I will sell you $150 plus shipping they are real good driver quality. Bill
tires guys, i want to keep the 14 inch rallys i have. my questions was, what is the biggest tire i can put on those rims.
according to the BF goodrich standards and they do hold true, the largest tire on 14x6" rims is 225r70 (which is what i have on my car) or 225r60. if u go to a larger tire than the 225, u can have a problem with sidewall flex/roll on the tire . the sidewall at the bead ring area will flex too much & eventually the sidewall will fail . minimum rim width for a 235r60 is 6.5 " i do know that a number of guys on this site to go beyond the recommended rim widths and install larger tires. as history, with the non metric designators for tire size in the late 60's & into the 70's , the tire size H70x14 fit nicely on 14x6" rims . had a set of those on my 70 malibu . back then they looked big!
And I'm one of them, and I got the recommendation from several other board members. I have 295/50/15's on stock 7 inch rims, and they drive fine and look great. frank
