with both weights and springs removed, should the plate w/ the weight pins turn freely back and forth against the plate w/ the spring pins? I have to put in a alot of effort to move it. Would that explain why when I just checked my mech. timing, that it didn't budge from idle to 2000 rpm?

Well, I put the original weights back on, and tried different springs, but the plate still is stiff, and my advance is not budging no matter the rpm, even w/ the vac cannister connected. I think I might have to ask for some assistance :Smarty: at the picnic saturday if people are willing

Between both those parts, the mainshaft and the points cam, there are two grooves filled with grease. If these grooves are filled with old, emulsified grease, free movement will be severely restricted, as you have felt.

Only remedy is to pull the dist and take it apart, clean the old grease off the parts, new grease/free it up and put it back together.
