hi fellas. i have a question for you, i went to time an engine with ta's 308 cam and when i turn the balancer (ati) to the 2 degree mark which would be 32 degrees total timing the engines dies, when its turned way up like past 40 it runs good. it is not out a tooth or anything been over that. what could it be, the cam is installed straight up but from what i understand the cam is built with 4 degrees advance into it. so do you have any thoughts on this? why cant i get it into time??

Valve timing and ignition timing are two different things, and are independent of one another. Unless you installed the cam and verified an intake centerline of 104*, you have no idea where the cam is. Sounds like you just lined up the dots, called it installed straight up, and assumed the cam is 4* advanced. It might not be.

That cam has alot of overlap. You will have to lock out the distributer advance. It needs alot of timing to idle due to unburnt fuel/ reversion gasses. Make sure your throttle blades aren't opening too much and pulling in fuel on the transition slots. If your carb has 4 corner idle screws, make sure they are all open the same amount as well as the throttle blades.

With that cam I run the lightest distributor springs so that as soon as the motor sees 1000 rpm all the timing is in. Makes for easy starting and great idle. Another option is locking the distributor at 32 but I find that it causes spark knock on hot starts....can be hard on the starter too.
Just don't crank it up and get that good idle and do a full throttle blast with 40 deg timing!

Can you put a video on here so I can hear it idle? I havn't put a Buick cam in heads up since highschool. Why can't I find a 308 cam from TA? Who makes it and where do I find the specs?
