I have my timing chain cover off to fix a few leaks around it (there was NO main seal left cept for the lil piece of rope near the shaft going to the oil pump and the metal for the old seal was riding against the timing chain)

my timing chain is rasing a consern.

with one side taught I can push the other in about 3/8" in from if you were to draw a line tangent to the two gears. is this enough to cause consern?

    its a 70 350 2bbl

I don't think it will HURT anything but your motor may not be performing as well as it could be( with the timing off like that) while you have the cover off, it would be a good idea to replace the chain.

    Timing

How many miles are on your engine? I've got 135000 on mine and it's time. The chain is stretched to the point where I have to advance it quite a lot to get it running right.

    slop

is that baised on because of the slop of the chain or other factors?

it now has a new chain and set correctly. just wonder how it will be. its at 138000 miles. it used to have no power at highway speed. it also has a 2bbl.

I'm no expert, but I've been told the timing chain can cause performance problems. I have never had problems at high speeds on the highway. My car cruises very well on the highway, I just have had lots of problems with my timing being too retarded and I have to keep advancing it to get it right. They say it is the timing chain...anyone else have an idea?

Correction: my car has 137000 miles.
