Thoughts on converting to Electronic Ignition

  1. Hello Buick Fans,

I have my 66 Buick Le-Sabre with a 340. My mechanic and I are having issues keeping the timing where it needs to be to run great. The mechanic recommended to me to change the vehicle over to electronic ignition. All my classic cars are original point system. What do you guys thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely. Points are horrible. Unless you have a specific reason to keep the points (an all original very rare car), it's a no brainer.

I've been kicking it around for 20 years lol, I figure before I bring the 67 to Florida I will break down and maybe possibly do it

Use the one that Todd sells made by Lectric Limited. It requires no modifications to the resistor wire and it is durable.

Point dwell directly affects ignition timing, so if points wear rapidly, or the distributor bushings are bad enough to cause shaft wobble, timing will vary or be all over the place. Running points at full battery voltage will wear them at an accelerated rate. If the distributor is in otherwise good shape, a points replacement system will give you more accurate and stable timing.
