Thinking of switching to aluminum heads

Thank you very much for all the information! I have more to think about now. I was hoping someone would have some thoughts on the intake and headers. That may save me some money I can spend elsewhere. Yes, those times came at Cecil using one of your converters, I live about 5 minutes away from the track.

I'll have the engine out soon anyway to install new gaskets and repaint it so, I figured if upgrading the heads would give a nice boost in power I'd do it now. It sounds like just adding the heads alone would not make a big difference. Although removing some weight from the front of the car is always a good thing.

    Thanks again for everyone's input.

More mid lift air flow is where you will pick up. The stage 2 SE is a great choice, great header room and way better exhaust flow and 290 cfm+ intake flow @ .400 lift and do a matching custom ground cam. You want the SP1 over the SPX because you won't spin it high enough to make up for the low end loss.

Well, I went ahead and bought the Gessler ported Edelbrock heads last week! I also got the head bolts and roller rockers. I have head studs on the engine now with the iron heads. Will they work with the Edelbrock heads or will I have to switch to the bolts? As soon as I can find the time I'll start pulling the engine out and do the swap.

The edelbrocks require the different bolts, so ive read

With head studs, it should be fine. It is possible that some might be the wrong length, but the bolt pattern is the same, so unless some are too short, it should be fine. Not that familiar with the Edelbrock heads.

Head to block bolts the same as STG 1.

Uses 3/8 intake bolts, like the 67-69 400/430 motors.

Well, I finally got the car back together with the Gessler Edelbrock heads on it. Last year at the Cecil County Buick Race with the iron heads, steel GS hood it ran 11.32 at 119 letting it shift itself at just under 6000rpms. This year with the aluminum heads and steel Skylark hood with Stage 2 scoop the car ran 11.13 at 121.09 on the first pass. I made 7 passes Friday, the worst was 11.24 and the best was 11.11 with the highest speed of 124.19! The car was spinning on all but the first pass coming out, the 60' times were between 1.61 to a worst of 1.72 all day. I need to work on the rear suspension. I messed up the air bag last year, bought a used set from someone on here a while ago but when I went to install them a few weeks ago they were all cracked and went into the trash. Friday the car felt like it would spin, then grab then spin again and go. The rest the run felt great. With that trap speed I would think that with a good 60' I should be able to run 10.80 or so. I almost picked up a HRparts sway bar from them on Saturday but I will probably just get another set of air bags for now and pick up the bar next year. I'll give it a couple more tries at Cecil before the end of October. What 60' time should I be getting? The car weighed 3810 with me and 3/4 tank of gas in it on Friday. 28x12.5 ET Streets, 3.73 gears and one of Trishield's 4200 converters. I had the front shocks set on 90/10 but after talking to HRParts I'll adjust them to 80/20 or 70/30 and see if that helps.

Should be in the 1.40s with what you have, mid 50's at the ver least my last combo went 1.53 best and 1.59 worst 100% stock suspension just bags and 28in DR's with a 331 gear, which I'll admit I was surprised but goes to show can work, that being said ive changed everything so it will prob never hook again ha, what is the verter flashing to?

Car is unloading from your description, also track prep makes or breaks stock suspension cars , my car would go 1.68 to 1.72 at home on test and tune nights , but at BG on a good track it pulled the 50's, same setup and tune just a different track, if possible try a 325 50 MT DR or 275 60 Pro tire , I could destroy 28 10.50 slicks , with the DR's it would slip and hook at home tracks

When I did have functioning air bags it had a best of 1.53 60' times but normally high 1.5's. I only go racing a few times a year at best anymore so I don't get a lot of time to test different things out. 1.40's would be awesome. Sounds like you had your setup dialed in great. I'll order new air bags tonight and see if that helps.

My buddy dropped almost .4 by doing nothing but adding the Spohn sway bar. similar to the HR BAR.
He still has stock upper and lower control arms.

Well, I finally broke into the 10's tonight. It's been a long time goal of mine with this car to drive it to the track, run in the 10's and drive it home. Tonight it did just that! The first pass was 11.008 @ 123.47, 2nd pass was 10.991 @ 123.95, 3rd was 10.963 @ 124.13 and the last run was 10.988 @ 124.72! I installed air bags in the rear springs last week, it's still spinning off the line, on the 10.96 pass it got pretty sideways on the launch. Before next spring I want to get the anti roll bar and maybe new tires but for now I couldn't be happier with the car.
