The Rear View

Phil It really *is* a 350...

Sunday I finished working to put the locker and rear cover on the car's rear end and decided to take it for a littl edrive to warm up the oil a bit, test the locker to see if it was as noisy as "they" say it it and generally beat on the car.

So I leave the house and head south to the first intersection, and take a left on a long stretch of 2-lane road that runs for about 2 miles with fields on both sides.

I look in the rear view mirror and notice this 90's Dodge RAM pickup with 33" tires and a lift coming up quick behind me. He gets clse enough that I can't even see his front bumper in my rear view and I'm not only pissed, but I'm seriously considering pulling off the road if it wasn't for the lack of a shoulder to pull onto.

Suddenly, the kid in the truck pulls into the westbound lane with oncoming traffic. He's literally playing chicken, at 1:00pm on a Sunday and making no attempt to pass me. I watch as cars in the other lane stop and pull off the road as he gets back in behind me and I'm like "screw this" and make an effort to get out from in front of him.

As I get into town, I make a turn to go past the police station but none of the cruisers are out in front. I make a u-turn to see the guy in the truck (facing east) at the stoplight (which is green) just sitting with people honking at him.

He finally pulls thru the intersection and I turn around heading west. As I look in my rear view mirror, I just manage to catch a glimpse of him crossing traffic, hitting a phone pole nearly head on, and spin back across the two lanes into the east bound shoulder.

I turn around (again) and drive up to find a couple of cars stopped and dragging the dazed kid out of the truck. He swiped the pole hard enough to rip the left front and rear wheels and rear axle loose, and the driveshaft was laying on the ground.

The cops showed up and took all our statements and information. I don' tknow if the kid was drunk, high, or just a dumbass but whatever the case was, it was a miracle he's not dead or worse yet, some innocent kid. THere were tire marks on the sidewalk near the phone pole, and he nearly hit a lady planting flowers in her front yard where his truck came to rest.

I got home, and my wife wanted to know where I was. I said I had spent the last half hour with the cops and she immediatley got red-faced and started yelling how my car was going to get me into trouble. I just sighed, shook my head, and told her what happened.
